Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan said the decision of awarding central contact to Shahid Afridi will be made after observing his performance.
The PCB chief, while talking to DawnNews on Sunday, said despite the fact that Afridi didn’t take part in the fitness test arranged by PCB due to some injury, “our main focus will be on his performance”.
When asked that in the current situation will Afridi be automatically selected for central contract like previous years, Shaharyar said “this decision will be taken by the selection committee”.
The current central contract awarded to players will end on June 30, 2016. Afridi is currently in the A category of players.
Intikhab Alam appointed team manager
The PCB chairman further announced that Intikhab Alam has been appointed team manager for the upcoming tour of England, “since he did a good job recently”.
The decision about hiring a bowling coach will be taken after consultation with newly appointed head coach Mickey Arthur, while the future of batting coach Grant Flower and Grant Luden will also be decided once the PCB officials discuss the matter with Arthur after his arrival to Pakistan, said Shaharyar Khan.
It is pertinent to mention that injuries forced former Pakistan captains Mohammad Hafeez and Shahid Afridi to pull out from the team’s fitness camp set to be held the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore from Sunday to Thursday.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), through this camp, had decided to test the fitness of all central contracted cricketers ahead of the boot camp at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul which starts May 14.

They need to introduce a points system where players score according to fitness, team work and performance. There then should be various cutoffs for selection. After certain cutoffs are met the chief selectors choose the final 16, this method will make the entire process much more fair.

More of the same. This country will never learn. No wonder we are at the bottom of the food chain. Can some one please take this PCB matter to the courts and have it investigated. Issues are non performance of players still being awarded and rewarded with contracts, people way beyond their retirement years (80-90 years old) still running PCB/national team with deplorable results.

It's bizarre that the PCB chief is still talking about the 'possibility' of getting Afridi back. He should be saying 'its unlikely Afridi will ever be back'

Yes, how can we have news without any mention of Afridi on the front page. Central contract for what - bowling 5 overs in a year and scoring 50 runs in 3 matches against Zimbabwe and BD. Isn't it time we close this subject and give some youngsters our trust, which has a potential of returns in the future.

Intekhab Alam Team Manager, Is it a joke ??? He is more than 70 years old guy, let him go home. The people like him really spoiled the cricket in Pakistan
We have lot of young people who can do a much better job than him. For the God sake please leave Pakistani cricket alone with these old guys.

A player who is not for selection in any of national sides having retired from all formats can have a central contract. To represent who? Is the board so impotent that they cannot tell him that he is way past his sell by date

Mr. Sharyar no more further promised to him we have suffered Humiliation in his captaincy destroying Pakistan team its youth, in 20 yrs he should given rest of life, not selected for future, even simple as a 12th man his not able for Pak team, bring young talent player in his place. Appreciate Inz & Company decision to dropped these non performer from Pakistan, I endorsed Inzi. No place for Afridi in future team.

@Karachi wala LOL As far as I can tell, Intikhab was also team manager during the 92 WC that Pakistan won. For close to 25 years, is he the only guy in Pakistan who can manage their underperforming team ?? Is there nobody else in Pakistan smart enough to manage their national side ?? Is he saving PCB money by charging nothing for his services ?? Is his managerial skills so out of this world that PCB keeps going back to him ?? If he dies tomorrow, PCB will be in a hole since they didn't have anyone to understudy this managerial guru.

Another excuse for not attending training camp. Has anyone seen him not playing a match due to injury? I am afraid Waqar was right, Afridi doesnt want to attend training sessions and on top of that he doesnt want to retire !!

O dear God. Will we ever get rid of old peopel like intikhab alam. PCB officials are incompetent people. We need younnger blood with new ideas. Pak cricket wil continue suffering I cant believe he was the manager back in 90s and still trying to destroy out of pakistan cricket.
