ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed on Saturday said, while addressing a press conference, that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) lawmakers have the highest number of offshore companies when compared with other political parties of Pakistan.
"When you look at the record, it is quite clear that PTI lawmakers have the highest number of offshore companies when compared with lawmakers from other political parties."
Pervaiz Rasheed also called the PTI chief a "pioneer of off-shore companies", repeating a phrase used by the premier's daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, earlier on Twitter.
The federal minister also took a sweep at Imran, and said "he has a weak memory", referring to the PTI chief's recent revelation regarding an offshore company used to buy his apartment in London.
“Imran Khan remembers the number of wickets he took and the number of runs he scored in 1980, but forgot about his off-shore company which was established in 1983.” Rasheed said.
Imran Khan, Jehangir Tareen, Aleem Khan, MPA Tarakai and Senator Tarakai have links with off-shore companies, added Rasheed.
He also added that Imran's sister also has an offshore company, while refusing to name her out of respect.
According to what he (Imran Khan) has stated earlier, all those possessing offshore companies are tax evaders, hence all the individuals named are tax evaders, stated the federal minister.
“Only one member of PPP is associated with an off-shore company," said Rasheed while giving a comparison of PTI with other political parties.
The federal minister also claimed that not a single parliamentarian or minister from PML-N has an offshore company.
Imran's London Apartment
Imran Khan admitted he formed an offshore company to buy the London flat in 1983 to evade British taxes.
He said he formed the offshore firm on the advice of his accountant to evade taxes during his playing days to buy a flat in London.
"I was already paying 35 per cent tax on my income there, so to evade further taxes, I bought the flat through an offshore firm, which was my right as I was not a British citizen," Imran told the reporters.
PTI spokesperson Naeemul Haq also admitted that his party chief had formed a 'legal' offshore company through his earnings from cricket, which owned his London flat.
Imran Khan had severely criticised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family for owning and benefiting from offshore companies after the ICIJ investigation which led to the release of Panama papers revealing offshore accounts of the rich and mighty across the world.
He, along with other opposition leaders, demanded the prime minister to resign until the issue is investigated and the premier gets a clean chit.
Earlier, he told a public rally that the Panama Papers exposed how 'corrupt' our PM was.

Why don't these leaders understand that it is not about offshore companies, it is about from where the money came for all these assets!
If the money came through legitimate sources, no problem of whether it is being managed by offshore companies or not. But if the source of money cannot be given, things are fishy and should be investigated.
If PTI is wrong, punished them, but it is no excuse to justify PM's corruption.

Why PML(N) folks can't understand that having offshore company is NOT illegal but when you avoid paying taxes on that income is illegal and highly unethical. In Panama the companies are formed to avoid paying taxes whereas in London you have to pay taxes.

I heard the minister's speech and was quite amused: the more he tries to defend Nawaz Sharif, and defame Imran, the more he sinks into the quagmire.
His statement about Imran not paying tax in Pakistan when he was playing cricket in England, and for Kerry Packer in Australia, is very misleading. It seems he is quite unfamiliar with Pakistani tax laws at the time.
Also, I refuse to believe that any accountant in England advised Imran how to "evade" UK tax. I hope, the minister knows the difference between 'tax avoidance' and 'tax evasion'! Imran is Oxford educated, I don't think he used the word tax evasion.

My Analysis of IK vs NS offshore companies
1) IK earned money in England in County cricket, payed taxes and
Bought a flat via Offshore holding at the advise of his then accountant , which sounds like is or was legal to do so.
2) Nawaz Sharif's bought Mayfair Flats through offshore holdings
but CANNOT show where the money came from .

People need to understand that offshore accounts and companies are perfectly legal allowed by laws to save tax. The issue is not having offshore comanies but the source of funding . The issue is tax evasion and money laundering. Imran khan offshore company had clear source of funding and was firmed for tax savings not evading.

It is not illegal to make offshore company but when you are working in a trust
situation you have to declare it and at the same time explain how you got this money.
It is also a requirement for everyone to declare it at the time of filing taxes.
It is such a simple concept and if someone hesitating its declaration than he or she
is trying to conceal shady deals.

Until yesterday opening an offshore company was an illegal and unethical act according to PTI. Now that IK has been caught red-handed, we now hear a new term - 'legal' offshore companies! So if IK forms an offshore company it is legal, but if others do the same, it is illegal. If IK evades taxes, that's no issue, but if others form offshore companies for efficient tax management, then that's corruption. And by the way, how do we know the money with which IK bought the flat was earned legitimately and not through wrong means as legendary batsman Omar Qasim had claimed in 1985 (accusations that cost him his career). The bottom line is - there is no Mr Clean in Pakistan politics. And IK is now as exposed as the Sharifs or Bhuttos!

What is big deal about Imran forming a company to own an apartment with legally acquired cash. It is very common in Europe to form a limited company to own an asset. This is a legal way to avoid repeat avoid capital or inheritance taxes. In case of PM the companies were established in tax heaven countries to hide assets and laundered money, for information of your readers Switzerland until recently law did not consider money laundering as crime. IK had a guts to admit the fact where as PM is hiding behind people like Rashid. He should come out clean and explain to the nation when and how were his family properties were acquired. This is the only way out for him.

Ownership of off shore company/ies is not a crime in itself. The issue is the origin of funds, means of transfer, if any any tax was paid (when in home country) and in case of politicians/public office holders - if wealth was declared.
In any case the if the government found any breach of law than its their responsibility to investigate.

No commission(s) needed for this purpose - the PM has simply to declare his family assets in Pakistan & abroad, source of funds for purchase of all assets owned by them, how huge funds required were transferred abroad, and what taxes were paid in Pakistan.
IK has made all declarations, sold his flat in London legally and transferred all money to Pakistan.

Most politicians in the world engage in some sort of corruption whether it is moral, intellectual or financial. It is time to stop this nonsense and go back to what everyone has delivered, or plans to deliver by the next elections. We know PPP politicians are corrupt, and the people gave them their verdict. Same fate awaits PMLN if they are corrupt. People of KPK are already giving their verdict to PTI. So let democracy be the best judge. Let the poor, suffering masses decide because they are wise beyond the mommy-daddy crowd's drawing room rhetoric.

Tax accountants all around the word do all the (legal) things to save taxes for their clients. That is part of their job. That is acceptable and no issues with that. It's normal.
To have an offshore company has nothing to do with the SOURCE of MONEY. Whether it was earned and transferred legally from one place to other and all taxes are paid for income, capital gain, etc.

According to one estimate Nawaz sharif worth is two billion us dollars. It is mind boggling how he accumulated such a huge amount in a country where people are getting more and more poor every year.Sharif family did not own a steel mill just a steel foundry and most of the steel mills in the world are losing money. A huge steel mill in Hamilton,Canada is on the verge of being close. Nawaz Sharif and his family members along with the party members are taking advantage of the ignorance or poor understanding of the money system

This is not the list of all Off Shore Companies owned by Pakistani. This is a release of data from One Law firm. There are hundred's if not thousands of such firms
So all these claims that People don't have off shore companies is completely false.
They just didn't use Fonseca That's All.

News Flash: Just heard, that the assets of former Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner's have been frozen, following her indictment for fraud in currency trading scandal, that caused Billions in losses to the national treasury.
Brazilian President Roussef was suspended from her office earlier this week, for manipulating the national budget to cover up deficit and for favors to political cronies.
Why is Pakistani legislature so helpless, and reduced to watching the show regarding NS's offshore companies and assets from distance as a spectator?

Panama Leaks have cast aspersions on individuals, not on political parties. This is not a political matter. It is a criminal matter. The onus lies on the individuals under suspicion to clear their positions and their names before the Law. It is not Parvez Rashid's job to defend wrongdoers in his party.

@Gaz IK still needs to explain how much he earned and tax paid during that period. Further being a Pakistani IK should have shown and tax paid on his overseas income in through tax returns in Pakistan. IK did not lodge any tax return in Pakistan until late 90s so IK still needs to provide a lot of explanations

The question is not who has has Offshore, but how they earned this money. Please do not confuse people, simply answer how PM family has earned this money, show the tax records etc. After all, if you know someone is as corrupt as you are and you are not taking action than you do not qualify to run govt. You will never be able to ask people to pay tax or stop corruption.

So Sharif Family is justified to have a few. And since both PTI and PMLn leaders have so PPP and other parties too are justified. Since all of the leaders have have black money and tax safe heavens so all of the country should be allowed to be corruption full and tax free. We are interested in two things. One how the money to buy flats was transferred to UK and second when did Share family buy these properties. IK has explained his part mow NS should come clean. Only problem is that NS never payed any tax in Pakistan and never declared any income.

the information minister should answer about our PM's wealth hidden through the off-shore companies, how did his sons buy the property in the UK as students, where the funds came from, were they send from Pakistan, if so by whom; through which channel; and what was the source of income, and whether taxes were paid on that income?
as regards Imran Khan, YOU are the Government. so go ahead and arrest him and indict him. but let us do that after our PM comes out clean.

This is a disaster for IK - Tax is a tax, it doesn't matter whether you formed the offshore company to avoid British Tax or Pakistani. We had really big hopes with IK but he is no different.

One mustn't conflate two things. Having honest money in a off shore company is at worst disloyal. As a head of state it is almost criminal. However having DISHONEST money that is not yours as a head of state in a off shore company is not only dishonest but out right criminal and treasonous. Voila the difference between IK and NS. Lets not forget that at the time IK was not in politics or a head of state. Finally at least IK admitted it while the Sharifs are in complete denial activating their machinery to divert attention.

Raheed and PMLN and Sharifs and Co. are benefiting for lack of education in Punjab thus spreading the word of owning of offshore companies rather than highlighting its legality.
Imran Formed Legal and Beneficial Offshore Companies for bringing back money to Pakistan which is good that too on his own name when we was not IN POLITICS.
Whereas, Sharifs who were in Govt. opened the company to take money of Pakistan and avoid Pakistani Taxes.
Anyway, I admit about Imran's failure to make it clear and his loudmouth about offshore companies that he mentioned on TWITTER that OFFSHORE COMPANIES ARE ONLY OPENED EITHER TO EVADE TAXES AND LAUNDER MONEY.

Why don't you go and query them. The way PML N is delaying the Panama Leaks I am afraid that the military will come and take over. Please remember that if Nawaz Shareef in some or other way has to resign he should resign and appoint any body from his side. A threat to Nawaz Shareef being a PM is not threat to democracy.
