KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday removed Karachi Commissioner Asif Hyder Shah from his position.
In a notification signed by Sindh Chief Secretary Muhammad Siddique Memon, Shah has been asked to report to the Services, General Administration & Coordination Department “with immediate effect”.
Shah, who is also serving as Hyderabad Division Commissioner and is widely known for his close association with the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party in the province, was given additional charge as commissioner Karachi in January, replacing Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui – a move that had irked opposition party Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
The sudden removal of Siddiqui from the post of Karachi commissioner had raised many eyebrows as he enjoyed a good reputation in political and social circles.
Shah is a son-in-law of the late former Sindh chief minister Abdullah Shah whose son, Syed Murad Ali Shah, is the provincial finance minister and an important figure in the ruling PPP.

Why is PPP blocking the Local Bodies in Karachi? Ignoring the representatives of Local Bodies , elected by the people of Karachi, is an anti democratic attitude. The PPP is not contributing to the strengthening of democracy in Pakistan.

In any case, the commissioner for Karachi must have been from Karachi to begin with. It was malafide of Sindh government, in any case, to impose a commissioner on two of Sindh's major cities who does not hail from these cities. This is not a bigoted argument. For key posts like this, a local resident, exposed with local affairs and issues, should have been preferred as a matter of pure logic.

Just yesterday Shah had directed management of Imtiaz Superstore to clean the silt it earlier dumped in the Lyari River in Gulshan-e-Iqbal to make space for illegal parking. Failing which the superstore would be sealed.
He said that Imtiaz Superstore must remove the mud at its own cost and asked for a daily report. He also said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has already issued tenders for the cleanliness of 30 large nullahs.
Today Shah has been removed. Makes one think...

The people of Karachi have been deprived and segregated completely from civic affairs of the city. The elected representatives are being denied to hold their offices because the bigoted uncouth Interior sindhi waderas do not want give power to Urban people and ruling on the basis of fake majority. The Urban people of Karachi have reached at the verge of extreme frustration and any moment this may explode to lead undesired consequences.

@Arabian Sea I am afraid i do not agree with you. These positions should be filled on merit full stop. There should never be a consideration of a local or non local, Sindhi, Punjabi or Muslim non -Muslim. Put the best person in job and leave him there for at least 3 years and give him the chance to work independently with out any political interference. This is what happens in all the developed and civilized countries. If we continue to work like we are doing now then do not expect any improvement.

@kanwarch: My research says that civil servants are hired on merit, so there is no merit or demerit thing, and civil servants are mostly hailed from relevant communities and neighbourhoods so that people do know about him and his family and feel safe and protected.

As usual its a joke in Pakistan, only those who have father, uncle, friends in politics can come and join anything from a Politician to Air-force to Police Constable. Shame on the government for running this stupid policy of "WHO YOU KNOW rather than what you know". So very disappointing and frustrating.

Karachi as a metropolis should have its own mayor and local government running the city but with a strong, well armed and provisioned, outside (perhaps Federal) undercover anti corruption/justice force beefed up with federal magistrates and judges targeting internal running of local government for swift stamping out of any violence or criminal activity by this government.

Mr. Shah is not holding the additional charge of Hyderabad. He is an outstanding and upright officer who did a great job as Commissioner Hyderabad. A graduate from Harvard University, IBA and a Stanford University fellow, Asif Shah has been removed because he stood up against the corrupt practices in the Local Governments in Karachi.
