HYDERABAD: Sindh University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abida Taherani passed away at a hospital in London on Thursday after a long illness. She was 61. She has left her husband and two daughters.Besides being a scholar, she was a strict administrator. She held the posts of professor of economics at the SU’s department of economics, director of the Sindh development studies, dean of the faculty of social sciences in 2012 and pro-vice chancellor in 2014.

She was appointed on Jan 15, 2015 as the SU vice chancellor.

Having a good educational background, she held top positions and received gold medals. She got Masters in Economics from the universities of Sindh and London. Later she did her PhD in agricultural economics in 1995 from Colorado State University, USA. She was awarded Pride of Performance on March 23, 2016 for her services in the field of education.

The University of Sindh and its all campuses remained closed on Thursday and would remain in mourning for one week, according to an SU press release, which said that the administrative offices, teaching departments and institutes would function as usual. No official ceremonies would be held on the SU campuses for a week, it said.
