PM Nawaz discharged from hospital, moves to home in London

KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was discharged from hospital on Monday after a week-long stay following his open heart surgery, state media reported.
The wife of prime minister Kulsom Nawaz and his two sons Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz accompanied the premier on his way home.
It was the 66-year-old's second major cardiac medical procedure in five years.
The London hospital where the procedure was carried out has not been officially named.
Earlier in the day, premier's daughter Maryam Nawaz had said that Nawaz Sharif will hopefully be discharged from hospital in the afternoon as doctors are satisfied with his progress and latest test reports.
Maryam tweeted on Monday saying “doctors satisfied with PM's progress and latest reports. All being well, Insha'Allah PM will be discharged this afternoon”.
On Sunday, nearly a week after the premier underwent surgery, Maryam had announced that Nawaz Sharif's recovery was on track.
"PM's recovery on course. Was made to walk several times in the corridor during the day, and up and down a flight of stairs twice," Maryam tweeted.
Since Nawaz was hospitalised, Maryam has taken charge of media management in the Sharif camp, feeding the press updates on her father's medical condition.
From announcing the prime minister’s decision to undergo the surgery, to tweeting his first picture after the procedure, Maryam’s Twitter feed has provided minute details about how much time the patient would spend inside the intensive care unit (ICU), as well as his tentative plans to come back home.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif underwent a successful open-heart surgery at a London hospital and was moved to an intensive care unit in a stable condition on Tuesday. He is expected to return to Pakistan before the end of Ramazan, Maryam said earlier.
"Three of his arteries were blocked. It will take five or six days for the prime minister to get discharged from the hospital and we expect that he will return home in three to four weeks," she said on Wednesday.
Following his surgery, the premier will be overseeing the affairs of government from London.

Yet we have no idea of which elected member is running the country erstwhile. Are republics supposed to function in such a way? Apparently, heir-apparent Maryam Sharif is calling the shots, but in what constitutional capacity? Since the last general elections Pakistan seems more a kingdom, less a republic.

Well as a fellow human being, I am all for wishing him well and be healthy. But to those who try to score political gain out of sympathy cannot be approved. In Pakistan some elected leaders used some kind of personal tragedy to evoke sympathy and get political gains. Same is true now in this case where a PM and his family who have a a well known corrupt background are using his surgery as to gain public sympathy and score political points and somehow throw smoke screens on the corruption investigation. We should show sympathy and help thousands of other Pakistani who are suffering from diseases and and need help. Pakistan is above and beyond personalities and their tragedies. Lets be honest and fair in our consideration for everyone not just few who are at the top.

there is no haste in coming back. please take complete rest for at least a year or two and then if you feel like pay a visit to Pakistan to appreciate the growth the "NATION" made whilst you were on the path to recovery. These halfwits have no notion of the state of affairs in the country where people have no drinking water, the old and infirm are deprived of their pensions, electricity shortages, gas shortages, whilst criminal activities and worse flourish in all parts of the country. Wake up Sharifs and smell the coffee beans. Pak Govt is Pathetic & FAILED govt. While Modi is going around the neighborhood and making agreements, Pak PM is in hospital and yet all his cabinet guys incapable of running the Govt. They will Wait for him to recover in 30 days and then startup the process of whatever really they do. This is Not 1980's. Missed opportunities don't come back. Pak govt Never learned from their Serious Blunders in Foreign policy setbacks and this PM is Definitely incapable along with so called establishment

Is Mariam Nawaz an official spokesman for the PM of Pakistan? Where are the doctors associated with the hospital where surgery was performed? Why the secrecy? Something is fishy about this heart surgery. It has drowned the Panama Papers corruption scandal on the Nawaz family.

PM sharif must explain to Pakistani nation how his family maintains and manages their fortune. Because the Panama Papers have confirmed the Sharif family controls a vast land and property portfolio both in Pakistan, as well as overseas, including several in London's upmarket Mayfair district — stately homes for the super rich and their families.
The very sad and unjust thing is that even the very basic health faciliities are out of the reach of poor people in Pakistan but the PM allways goes abroad for first class treatment, even for the minor health issues. But the dying children of THAR (Pakistan) have no value to survive. Estimated 20000 women die each year in Pakistan because of the poor maternal health service and lack of health faciliities in Pakistan.

Best wishes to PM for a speedy recovery. He had three blocked arteries and therefore must have had three bypasses. It is customary here in the UK that following such surgeries the patient is taken on walks as described by Mariam Nawaz, day after the surgery so as to ensure that the plumbing work carried out is working properly. If so, the patient is discharged the same day or the day after. I am speaking from experience, I had five bypasses and was sent home on the third day. This was twelve years ago. I was 58 at the time. He will however need to take his medication regularly, keep an eye on his diet and at his age, slow down a bit.

@Gullu4u : facilities for such surgeries are available in Pakistan. My brother had an open heart surgery with three bypasses some thirteen years ago in Karachi. He was 57 then. He went for Umrah some six months ago. He still works in his managerial post in a busy office ten hours a day, six days a week.

I heard stories in 2000s from my elders that India's first Sikh President Giani Zail Singh had a open heart surgery in early 80s in America. He was so impressed by Dr Naresh Trehan (who performed the surgery), that he bought the doctor and the hospital back to India for the masses and that small step in early 80s lead to a revolution in cardiac care in India and within a decade or so, India became self reliant in medical care. Hope Nawaz does the same. Get well soon Nawaz!

@Petrolhead Thrs no end to conspiracy theories.He might have undergone minimal invasive cardiac surgery in which few holes in chest give access to heart .Even in open heart surgery we try to make the Patient walk very next day if parameters are stable .

Thanks for your comment. We were informed that 4 grafts were done. I thought it was only possible by cutting through the rib cage. After such a massive operation the patient should at least need some "attention" if not assistance by family members around him while coming down the stairs and climbing inside the car.
