PESHAWAR: At least one person was injured in an explosion outside the Mardan residence of former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on Thursday, police said.

The bomb had been planted in front of Hoti's house in an umbrella at a traffic police checkpost at Akbar Phatak, police sources said. Traffic police used the umbrella as a shade to escape the sun while on duty.

Bomb Disposal Squad personnel said 500 grams of explosives were used in the making of the bomb.

The blast left one passerby injured, who was shifted to DHQ Hospital Mardan, said Superintendent of Police (SP) operations Mardan Safiullah Gandapur.

After the blast, police arrived at the site and started a search operation in the area.

Earlier in Feb 2013, the then-CM and Awami National Party (ANP) leader survived a grenade and suicide attack on his convoy in Mardan, which lies around 50 kilometres northeast of Peshawar.

That attack came nearly two months after the killing of Bashir Ahmed Bilour in a suicide bomb explosion in Peshawar.

The ANP has been a continual target of militant groups operating in northwest Pakistan.
