MUZAFFARABAD: Two young men drowned while bathing in the Upper Jhelum Canal in the southern Mirpur district on Sunday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Bilal and Mohammad Tariq, both from the New Ludhar village. Both were said to have been 20 years old.

While bathing, one of the men lost his balance, and the other attempted to rescue him. Both were swept away by the strong current near Pull Dabban, within the Afzalpur police station area, a police official told Dawn. Rescuers were not able to retrieve their bodies until evening, the official added.
