GUJRAT: Roads and some government buildings were submerged in rainwater following a heavy downpour on Tuesday morning.

The city’s drainage system failed to flush out the water that remained accumulated till the evening.

All major arteries such as Circular Road, Jail Road, Jinnah Road, Rehman Shaheed Road, Bhimbher Road, Ramtalai Road, Shahdaula Road, Chowk Pakistan, Muslimabad, Muslim Bazaar and its adjoining areas were filled with water which caused inconvenience to the citizens. Motorists had to suffer a great difficulty as their vehicles were stalled in rainwater.

This was the first heavy rain of the season, which exposed the sanitation and drainage system of the city as storm water drains were filled with heavy silt. The Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) could not manage to de-silt the drains before the rain and the sewerage was found choked on most of the roads.

Later, in a handout issued in the evening, the district government claimed District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chattha and TMA Administrator Irfan Ali Kathia visited various parts of the city after the rain and inspected water pumping machines at disposal stations of Bole, Kalara etc.

Residents urged the authorities concerned to take notice of the failed drainage system of the city as the rainy season was looming and could further aggravate the situation.

GANG RAPEED: A woman was raped by three men in Badhan village in Tanda police precincts on Tuesday.

The woman told police she along with a cousin and family friend was going towards Marala Headworks when they lost their way and entered an unfamiliar place near Badhan village.

She said three men intercepted them by introducing themselves as policemen and ordered them to come along to the Karianwala police station.

They took the woman and her cousin with them on motorcycles and asked the family friend to walk to the station.

She said the men instead took them to an outhouse where they gang-raped her and later dropped her and her cousin at the Dhool Kalan bus stop.

Police registered a case against the three suspects under Section 376 (ii) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the report of the woman, and started an investigation.
