LAYYAH: A low-level flood in the Indus has inundated several villages and standing crop in Karor tehsil and Layyah. Currently 253,000 cusecs of water is flowing through the river in Layyah district.

Pre-monsoon rains have inflated the Indus and a low-level flood hit the district’s riverine union councils of Warhan Seharan, Baseera, Sahuwala, Shadu Khan, Shahpur, Kotla Haji Shah, Lohanch Nashaib, Jhakkar, Bait Wasawa Shumali, Bhakkari Ahmed Khan and Paharpur.

Standing crops of green fodder, chili, sesame seed, cotton, moong and sugarcane were damaged, while Bait Moongar, Warhan Seharan, Nooraywala Katcha and Pakka, Basti Madh, Basti Dirkhani, Sumra Nashaib, Dullu Nashaib, Jaisal Nashaib, Basti Khirani, Basti Gurmani were also inundated.

A 150-foot long breach near Lala Creek in Jaisal Nashaib inundated Basti Turri, Basti Manjhota, Basti Nutkani, Basti Pachar, Gishkori and Dasti. People of union councils Bhakkari Ahmed Khan, Bait Wasawa and Jhakkar started moving to safe places on their own.

Mohammad Arshad Wattoo, a district government flood-fighting officer, told Dawn the situation was under control and there was nothing alarming as water discharge was decreasing at Chashma Barrage downstream.

The district government had established medical, livestock and relief camps at F-north embankment and other places, but so far nobody had been evacuated, he added.
