KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday after great deliberation approved an extension in the special powers of the Pakistan Rangers for 90 days in the city.
Newly elected Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah signed the summary to extend the Rangers' stay in Sindh for one year and an extension of 90 days in the special powers of the paramilitary force, said a statement issued by his office.
The approved summary will now be sent to the federal Interior Ministry.
In a statement issued by the CM House, Shah said he hoped the Rangers would continue to work for peace in Sindh with the same commitment.
However, the statement was ambiguous as to whether the jurisdiction of the Rangers' powers extended to the whole province.
Earlier, a senior official in the Sindh government told Dawn that Shah held a meeting with the co-chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party Asif Zardari in Dubai on Sunday, at which the latter ordered the CM to notify Rangers’ one-year stay in Sindh with policing powers for three months.
Apart from discussing the Rangers’ powers issue with Zardari, Shah had also sought the former president’s guidance over the expansion of his cabinet to accommodate certain leaders.

Extending period of rangers into the province is right decision and it is on the merit, this shall definately overcome expected clash between the state institutes. As far as the powers of rangers is 90 days for particualar city karachi, it should be extended to up province as criminals are availabe entire provinice and corrupt element. It is true the ratio of that people in increased in the quaid city but when the operation of rangers condct in the karachi, the notorious flee from the city and take ahylum interior.

This is a shameful way of extending powers of para-military force, which has come to help the government to maintain law and order situation in the province. The tug of war for power create a bad impression and negatively affects the ongoing operation in Sindh, which has not seen peace for more than three decades. It is therefore highly needed that the federal govt. takes the charge and extends stay of Rangers to act ruthlessly against all types of criminals, gangsters, target killers, robbers, and etc. through the province of Sindh.

Even if the special powers not extended beyond Karachi, the Rangers do not care as they are already doing operation without it & they will even go beyond it as per the order of the boss. The arrest of Asad Kharal from Larkana & his escape then arrested from Sukkur by the Rangers is a classic example of the power they can use, with or without special powers beyond Karachi.

A delayed or half heartedly action,not appreciatable at all.Next time there must be automatic extension.And there will be no apologetic approach from any Federal Minister for extension.Pakistan just can't afford any delay or excuses,in security matters, please understand .

Why Limit to Karachi? Sure, Karachi has terrorism related issues, but other big cities are not that behind in crime and terrorism either. You have to compare the population as well, more issues in Karachi because it's a huge city, bigger than Mumbai now. However, comparatively, Punjab and other parts have huge issues too! When is Rangers going to clean those areas up?

It is a clear evidence that Rangers deployment in Sindh was never taken seriously. Today's approval mean that all criminals fear arrest could live in Hyderabad and would never be arrested. This suits the current provincial Government more than anybody else because most of criminal elements are within and they in any case do not contest election in Karachi, all are from interior.
