THE vehicular traffic in Karachi is getting worse by the day. There is no respect for traffic laws. Traffic lights are ignored as if they do not exist.
After making roads signal-free and closing most road crossings to improve traffic flow, people instead go on the wrong side which slows down the traffic, defeating the very purpose for which the crossings were closed.
Unfortunately, this happens in the presence of the traffic police who seem to help from these defaulters to clear the road earlier than those who are on the correct side.
I do not understand why these offenders are not booked. With cars, motorcycles and rickshaws increasing by over 20,000 every month, in three years, there will be no place on Karachi roads for them to move, especially when footpaths and roads are also being encroached upon in every part of the city.
Will the inspector-general of police do something to improve this unruly traffic, and will the Karachi administration clear the roads and footpath of encroachments?
