Mahatma Gandhi, was not born a Mahatma (Sage). Like all great men, he grew up and developed in to one. When living in south Africa, as a young man, he was like any other ordinary Indian, who look down upon Africans, due to their black skins and tribal life style. But Gandhi, the world remembers and respects, was the "Mahatma", which came much later in his life. And that Mahatma, gave up sophisticated dresses, because he found it unjust. He dressed like poorest of Indians. He gave up all comforts and adopted all hardships willingly, mostly lived in huts outside city limits. Because a poor Indian was like that. He wanted inter-faith harmony and friendship. He adopted Dalits of india. He walked almost entire length and breadth of india, bare-feet. I am not a fan of Gandhi as a leader of men. But i find it funny that he is hated now a days in India, because he was too "peaceful", too kind and liberal. Because he was too good, too gentle a man. A mahatma indeed.

@Ajay Vikram Singh I absolutely revere Mahatma Gandhi. Long before it became the norm in countries like Canada, Mahatma Gandhi promoted a kind of liberalism which encompassed the entire mankind.
