A suspect detained from Korangi area of Karachi by Sindh Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) died on Friday under mysterious circumstances, said police officials.

The police claimed that the arrested suspect jumped from second floor of the Civil Lines building and died of injuries.

"CTD team on tip off provided by Dera Ghazi Khan police conducted targeted raid in Korangi area on Saturday night and arrested Abdul Hameed, 46," said Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) CTD Naveed Khowaja.

"The CTD team brought him at their office in Civil Lines and got First Information Report registered against him over possession of illegal weapon, which was recovered from his custody during the raid," he added.

Naveed Khowaja also claimed that the deceased suspect was wanted in several criminal cases.

“He [Abdul Hameed] was wanted in at least nine criminal cases and was declared absconder by local courts in Dera Ghazi Khan in two murder cases,” he said.

"On Friday morning, he [Abdul Hameed] went to washroom located on second floor of the CTD Civil Lines. When the suspect came out from the washroom, he pushed the police constable and jumped from second floor of the building,” claimed Khowaja.

Police further informed Dawn that the suspect sustained critical injuries and was taken to Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he succumbed to his injuries.

Additional Police Surgeon Dr Kaleem Shaikh, however, revealed that Hameed had already dead when brought to JPMC.

“The suspect, Abdul Hameed was brought dead at the JPMC,” said Dr Shaikh.

"Since it was a custodial death, concerned magistrate has been informed to conduct post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death," the police surgeon added.

SSP Khowaja apprised Dawn that ‘departmental inquiry’ has been initiated while judicial inquiry would also likely to be conducted by the magistrate concerned into the incident.
