KARACHI, Dec 16: Naveen Perwani routed his cousin Amit Parwani 6-1, to lift the 8th Karachi Club snooker Open Challenge Trophy on Tuesday at the Karachi Club.

Amit 10th in the National ranking reached the final by surprising the national champion Khurram Hussain Agha 5-2, avenging his 7-4 defeat to Khurram in the Red & White Latif Masters final two and half months ago.

On the other hand, Pakistan’s No.3 Naveen Perwani booked his berth in the final by accounting for the World amateur No.2 Saleh Mohammad.

Naveen won the toss and broke the pack for the match. Both players knowing each other’s game like the back of their hand began on a defensive mode and after a few visits by both players to the table, Naveen finally broke the ice. But as the game progressed at a snail’s pace, Amit was in the lead 52/39, with three coloured balls on the table.

Sinking blue and pink, Amit at last bagged the frame 63/39 after 40 minutes, to take the lead 1-0. Helped on with a break of 30, Naveen now potting confidently was comfortably placed 41/10 in the next frame and with only 41 points left on the table, blundered on the pink ball. This unforced error however did not prove costly, as Naveen equalised the frame scores 1-1 by winning 52/16, with all the coloured balls on the table.

Locked now at 1-1, Naveen chalked up another useful break of 48 points moving in front 56/0. With little to offer Amit surrendered the frame as Naveen increased his lead 74/14, with two reds and the six coloured balls to play for.

Confidence soaring higher, Naveen named Pakistan captain for the India- Pakistan Snooker series that begins on Wednesday, reduced Amit to a mere passenger in the fourth frame, scoring 55 points on the trot. Once again Amit was forced to throw in the towel with Naveen leading 71/8, with three reds and the coloured balls to pot.

Trailing 1-3, Amit sunk deeper into the mire having no answer to his cousin’s ruthless display as Naveen ran away with the frame 76/6, and increasing his lead to 4-1. Trying desperately hard to get his act together, Amit moved closer to the jaws of defeat as Naveen came through with a quick break of 39 and adding 34 more points on his next visit to the table, the Pakistan No.3 put another nail in the coffin, winning the seventh 74/1 and was now just a frame away from victory leading 5-1.

Now on the victory charge, Naveen continuing to pot fluently, reserved his best for the final frame with a magnificent clearance of 92, to emerge victor by a 6-1 margin.

Naveen was presented with the winning trophy and the winner’s cheque for Rs.25,000, while Amit had to be content with the runners-up purse for Rs.12,000.

The two losing semifinalists Saleh and Khurram received Rs.5000.00 apiece, while Mohammad Yousuf received Rs.2000.00 for notching up the highest break of 92, which was later equalised by Naveen in the final.

The four quarterfinalists Shakeel Bhatti, Mohammad Yousuf, Vishan Gir and Atiq Latif Bux each received Rs.2000.00

The winner of the First Phase, Ahmed Saleem, pocketed Rs.5000.00, the runner up Aneel Bherwani Rs.3000,00 and Rajesh Lakhwani Rs.1000.00 for registering the highest break of 61.

The First Phase position holders Asim Ghani, Kassim Kamani, Aneel Bherwani, Ahmed Saleem, Farhan Idrees, Sanjat Parwani, Baqar Kamani and Bharat Satiani each received a cheque for Rs.1000.00.
