Three doctors of Department of Health, Government of Sindh, lost their lives in this fire. They were here to attend a consultative meeting of the Department of Health, which was to be held at the same hotel today (Monday).

Is National Disaster Management Authority Pakistan - NDMA, still there? I once attended one seminar arranged by them in Islamabad, surely they would have spent huge money on its arrangements. I also learnt that they are given reasonable budget to be prepared for dealing with any such disasters. But after seeing pictures of this fire incident with bamboo made stairs, tied with ropes and fire staff with insufficient safety gears tells us different and disappointing story. The pictures with foreign guests sitting in open air, unattended is even the worst.

Even that is selective in its approach. It has very limited presence in smaller provinces, and especially in the step-city of Pakistan, Karachi.

I was a guest in the hotel. I checked out on saturday morning. Imagine my shock when i saw the same hotel on fire killing so many and injuring even more, another day in there and my name could've been among the injured or worse. I feel blessed to be alive today and My prayers are with all the people who met this unfortunate fate and pray for a fast recovery for the injured.

No fire extinguishers, no fire exits, incompetent management, and yet rated as a 4 star hotel? More like a death trap! Lucky the casualties were not higher.

KMC s fire fighters are incapable to rescue people . Budget is misappropriated and appointments are not on merit.
Majority of recruited people is not performing their duties and doing work of their political party.
Most important department to rescue citizens of Karachi Karachi is at the mercy of political bribe . There is a need of investigation in appointment and facilities vehicles and equipment they have been provided

I was present at site right from #:30 AM because of a close associate trapped on 7th floor. No one in helping party explored the possibility of using emergency exit at the back yard of hotel. It was made use of at around 5 AM when most of the trapped people were evacuated. At least hotel management should have been vigilant to ask rescue worker to use the exit. It could have save precious lives and injuries. Sad Incident. God Almighty grant deceased highest place in jannah. Ameen

We need to to have extensive fire drills on a routine basis. As some one mentioned, fire exit was used very late, shows that the staff had no idea how to make use of available options.

Very sad but eye opener. Where is the sindh government local department and their inspectors. They are supposed to visit the premises and check these areas of critical importance but not enjoy free food at the hotel. Sindh building control authority also needs to buckle up and only issue NOC when fire exit plans are available for any new construction. Everyone knows this is not the case and incase of any natural disaster in sindh, God forbid, we will be in a very bad situation of loss of human lives.

Instead of criticizing & blaming, pray for those ppl who lost their lives in this incident. This type of incident can happen anywhere & at any time, what ever measures you take. Only thing to work on is to how to prevent more casualties & have a quick response time from the fire brigade & hospitals. Make our rescue dept more equipped with latest gadgets & techniques.

Rules, Laws and Standard all are there, but sadly all government departments are run by corrupt incompetent people who can't keep check on what's being followed in the city. Shameless politicians are responsible of this sad incident. Their only actions is to show up, say few words, bag more money in the name of relief funds.
To check the reality of my opinion you just need to take a look at road and traffic management which is infront of everyone. Corrupt and incompetent are running it without fulfilling responsibility. Government is watching everything but don't take any action as their account are filled by Tax payer money every month which is what they want. For them, honesty, dignity, ethics, social responsibility all are not worthy.

Nothing in Pakistan is built to any engineering or dafter codes, contractors like NLC ( under army) even don't follow the codes, an example is the collapse of a bridge in Karachi when Musharraf was in power. A full overhaul of the engineering codes and standards is required in this country to avoid such incidents in future.

what a sad day, every day bad news about Pakistan.s safety and security always bother me. I work in a 21 story building and i have been safety rep for my floor. building safety codes dictates that there must be smoke/fire/CO detectors on each floor of the building. The building must be routed with emergency exit plan. When there is fire/smoke on any floor the fire alarm triggers. The floor having problem will be evacuated first through the stairs, no elevtors please. Later on all the remaining floor will be evacuated. For a 21 story building it takes hardly 15-20 minutes to evacuate guaranteed. Ever month or so there is a false alarm for peoples training and reminder to be vigilant.

"Incidents can occur at everywhere but with the strong safety precautions it can be avoided and losses may be reduced by taking strong measures".
Safety Precaution
A load lifting rope having lifting suitable capacity & length and hooked with an anchor point should be available in every room at elevated floors to rescue the people in case of fire emergency. whenever a massive fire will occur, victims will throw the rope from outside the window, hold the rope and try to go down at ground level safely.
