Rangers detained several Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London activists while they tried to hoist the party flag and write slogans on Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk, DawnNews reported on Friday.
While talking to the media about the incident, Rangers sector commander Brig Naseem Ahmad said, "Some people sat on the road reciting the Holy Quran. Some women came to us and requested permission to do recitation and the permission was granted."
"When these women returned, some male party workers raised party slogans and started putting up party flags in the area. The police took action on this and arrested some of the workers," he added.
When asked about the number of people detained, he said the people creating chaos were taken in.
As a result of the detention many party workers conducted a sit in on the road leading from Ayesha Manzil to Yadgar-e-Shuhada, disrupting the flow of traffic.
Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk was previously known as Mukka Chowk and holds a symbolic significance for MQM party workers.
Unrest at Pakka Qila
Around half a dozen activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London were taken into custody after a heavy contingent of police resorted to teargas shelling and baton charge against them when they raised pro-Altaf slogans at Pakka Qila after Friday prayers.
Around 1,000 people gathered at the graves of their slain workers after entering the Qilla from its rear side.
After holding a memorial programme, the activists started raising pro-Altaf slogans. The slogans continued after they were asked by a senior police official to leave as the memorial had concluded.
Police then resorted to baton charge, tear gas shelling and aerial shooting. It led to a stampede in and outside Pakkaa Qilla, causing minor injuries to some protesters.
At some distance from the graveyard at Pakka Qilla, MQM - Pakistan was also observing a memorial inside Pakka Qilla. While permission to hold a memorial was denied to MQM – London, it was granted to MQM – Pakistan.
Protesters also pelted police officials with stones. A case has been registered at Fort police station under sections 6/7 of ATA against the protesters.
SSP Irfan Baloch said protesters were raising anti-Pakistan slogans.
“They (MQM - London) had no permission to organise any event and they tried to intrude therefore police had to resort to tear gas shelling to disperse them”, he said.

The MQM-London faction should not be allowed to undertake any political activities, since their leader has openly spoken against the State of Pakistan and called for Indian and Israeli support. His actions have severely hurt the entire nations feelings and sentiments and there was an uproar in every quarter to ban this party and start the proceedings of treason against their leader. However, the saner elements of MQM in the shape of Mr. Farooq Sattar came forward and openly disassociated his party from its chief for having committed the act of treason. So, this faction may be allowed to do politics and anyone who dares to come forward in the support of MQM London must be apprehended and appropriate charges may be initiated against them.

I am a Pakistani and I like to enjoy my rights as other countrymen do. In the prevailing situation now in Karachi and in Azizabad now how on earth one could expect me to show my patriotism. Altaf Hussain is the leader of Mohajirs and if his supporters like him then what is wrong with it. I am confident that the LEAs will never allow spaced terrorists and anti-state parties to restart their activities in Pakistan. There is no place for Taliban, Baloch Rebels, religious fanatics to destabilize our beloved country. This is the wish of every Pakistan and I am sure you agree with it from inside.

@ khan You may not agree but the fact is that most of the bhatta khors and target killers belonged to banned outfits and 'peoples aman committee'. There have been some criminals in MQM too as it is a party of humans. The LEAs projected MQM as a party of criminals and killers for their vested interests. Scotland yards already cleared AH from the cases whereas our top leaders and rulers yet to be cleared. In my opinion unrest in Karachi was created deliberately by rulers in order to shift businesses from Karachi to other provinces.

For all mqm /altaf followers, pls. read other comments here. You must be patriotic first to your country and then leaders. My parents were also mohajirs who migrated at partition. I was born & raised in karachi. So I am not a mohajir anymore. I take pride in being a Pakistani not mohajir.
Please think about your country first; not ethnicity or language. Our leaders have failed us, they have destroyed our true identity by dividing us. I also used to think that mqm is godsend and they are our true representatives when I was younger. But now, I feel altaf and his men have degraded mohajirs and inflicted the nation severely. We love our country first. While we like our ethnicity, we cannot let it get in the way of our nation's existence.
Remember, we don't need to be bound by an unconditional love for our leaders. We need to judge them at every step and disown them when they fall out of line. Unfortunately that's what altaf and his men have done (possibly been doing all along).

So why the economy of Karachi did not get better since extortion and killings have stopped? Normally the economy grows once peace is established. Businessmen should have a growth of revenues since they're not paying bhatta anymore. There should be growth in investment since there's no more fear. Does that reflect in taxes and investment? Maybe it is reflecting in other provinces' economy if you look at their growth in same period. There is not a single new public transport inducted in the city of 20m since peace is restored. Transporters do not seem to agree with you. But you can see new buses in other provinces in the same period. Killings in other provinces did not affect their economy. If you're so sure, please induct one, huge profit is guaranteed.
