PESHAWAR: A senior police officer lost his life and his son suffered injuries in a gun attack within the jurisdiction of the Faqirabad police station on Saturday evening.

A police official said that DSP Riazul Islam and his son were coming out of a mosque in Madina Colony on Charsadda Road after prayers when two assailants opened fire on them. Mr Riaz, who worked in the Counter-Terrorism Depart­ment, died and son Fayyazul Islam injured. The attackers fled, he added.

SP City Circle Shahzada Kaukab Farooq told Dawn that there were two attackers on foot.

He said Fayyaz returned fire but could not save his father. Fayyaz was said to be in a stable condition.
