DADU: The Jamshoro police said on Thursday that they raided the residence of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (Nawabshah) registrar Ghulam Rasool Khaskheli in the Syedabad area and arrested his son, Anis Khaskheli, in connection with the mysterious death of Sindh University student, Naila Rind, whose body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room on Sunday.

Sources said that the arrest was made on the basis of a 24-minute call, which appeared to be the last conversation appearing in the call data of the deceased woman’s mobile phone. Police were looking into the strong possibility that it was Ms Rind and Mr Khaskheli speaking on their respective mobile phones.

The registrar, when contacted for his comment, confirmed the arrest of his son, and said that the raid on his house was conducted in his absence as he was on duty at the university in Nawabshah at that time.

He said his son had completed his masters in English from SU in 2008 and since then he had almost nothing to do with the institution. At present, he added, his son was serving as teacher in a private school.

He said he did not know why his son was arrested as the Jamshoro police had not informed him or his family about the charge on which the raid was conducted and his son was taken into custody. “Nor have they informed us where he has been taken to,” he added.

Anis Khaskheli is said to be a resident of Jamshoro, adds our staff correspondent in Hyderabad.

Speaking to Dawn over phone, his father Ghulam Rasool Khaskheli said he requested the police to let him see his son but was not obliged. “I also approached the Jamshoro SSP to know why my son was picked up but in vain,” he said.

Giving details of his son’s detention, he said: “A policeman, who was riding a motorbike, knocked at the door of their house and when Anis came out, he was taken away in a white car. Anis told my daughter-in-law to inform me that he is being taken away by police,” he said.

In reply to a question, he said he came to know from the news on TV channels that Anis was detained in connection with the Naila Rind case. “I am seriously concerned about my son’s life,” he said.

Meanwhile, the SU inquiry team, which has already recorded statements of four teachers, a clerk, a librarian and two wardens, besides the Marvi hostel provost and Sindhi department chairman, would record more statements on Friday.

According to a committee official, they would consult Jamshoro SSP Tariq Wilayat with regard to the evidence collected so far by the police.

“We want to talk to the deceased woman’s roommates and class-fellows.”

He referred to the death of her close friend, Nasim Mallah, who died of heart attack soon after her death. “We want to arrive at some conclusion without prejudice to anyone,” he said. A source in the Jamshoro police said they were working on three theories — her family’s possible pressure on her to marry; she had estrangement with a friend; and whether she was interested in someone. “On our part, we are clear what has happened but I am unable to share it at this stage,” he said.

Ms Rind’s brother, Nisar Rind, speaking to Dawn again dismissed reports that any aspect of his family’s intention to marry her off could be something to do with her mysterious death.
