The interior ministry on Tuesday gave its approval for the issuance of a red warrant against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) supremo Altaf Hussain, DawnNews reported.
The red warrant is an international notice sent to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) seeking the arrest and extradition of an individual.
The MQM founder is wanted in various cases that include charges of terrorism and incitement to violence, among other offences.
The approval for the red warrant was issued apparently in compliance with the orders of an anti-terrorism court, which is hearing three identical cases against Hussain pertaining to his Aug 22 anti-state speech.
Police had also charged MNA Kanwar Naveed Jameel, Qamar Mansoor and Shahid Pasha in the three cases for allegedly listening to and facilitating the speech.
They had additionally named Hussain, Dr Farooq Sattar, Khawaja Izharul Hasan, Dr Amir Liaquat Hussain and other MQM leaders as absconders.
FIRs for the three cases had been lodged on the complaints of three private persons.
In its last hearing of the cases, the court had issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of the absconders, and directed the investigating officer to approach the interior ministry and secure red warrants for the MQM supremo's arrest through Interpol.
Following Hussain's Aug 22 diatribe, a large number of cases were filed against the party chief in Karachi, Quetta and Gilgit-Biltistan region. Anti-terrorism courts hearing these cases have also issued separate non-bailable warrants against the MQM chief.

Politics is taking over the common sense. pML N is trying to counter the efforts of army of making MQM irrelevant. Once Altaf is in PAkistan even from jail he will be able to win Karachi for MQM otherwise PPP and PYI will win a few and PMLN wants to make sure that does not happen

Why not just hand over Imran Farooq's killer to UK. Their justice system actually works and there is not going to be any mess in Pakistan. Well, just like this red warrant is pretty useless. UK will not hand over Altaf Hussain to Pakistan and use the excuse of "we don't hand over suspects to countries with capital punishment laws".

As far as I know, Red Warrant means that Interpol has to take this matter and deal with the country where the person is found to have him apprehended and extradited to the country where the warrant was issued.
So the details should be coming forth, we hope..

Interior ministry is free to issue whatever the color of warrant they want, whether it's Red or Green, it will endup in the dustbin of British interior ministry. Infact, they don't act on prejudice requests which was confirmed last week when they refused to reopen the money laundry case.

The magistrate (usually a qualified barrister) in UK decides whether there is enough evidence against the accused to support the execution of a red warrant. If the evidence is flimsy or inadequate, the red warrant cannot be executed by the UK police with out the express authority of the magistrate.

I believe Altaf Hussain should face all charges against him, having said that, no one has been able to prove anything against him in any court of law in Pakistan or in England, even though almost half a million British pounds in cash were recovered from his residence in London, and many other claims against him. So why cause such a uproar over some speeches when we have real criminals and corrupt politicians and powerful people walking around Scott free?
