“I was born in Mohanpura, the eldest of 11 siblings. My father was a stenographer at General Headquarters, and we were not in good condition, financially.

My father enrolled me in school, where I stayed in sixth grade until I lost interest in my studies. After some time, my father realised I wasn’t doing anything and he put me to work. My father had bought a shop in Bhabra Bazaar in instalments, which he rented out to Khalid Bhai, a well-known panel beater and paint expert, especially for scooters and motorcycles.

I worked as his apprentice for six years, mastering the skill. At the beginning, Vespas were a very common and respectable ride for middle class people and would come in for maintenance, but the trend has changed to motorcycles now so the paint job and panel beating work has as well.

I have three children – two daughters and a son. My eldest daughter is married, and the younger one is studying. My son got an associate engineering diploma in mechanical engineering. He tried to find a job after his studies but could not, so I encouraged him to help me with my work.

We do five to seven sets of motorcycle petrol tanks every day, side covers, side panels and chain covers. Since my son began working with me he has been earning for himself and he feels more confident.”
