The government of Balochistan on Thursday cancelled the registration of 3,250 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) under the National Action Plan (NAP).

Registration of the NGOs was cancelled during a scrutiny process and after checking their documents, said Saira Atta, an official of the Balochistan Industries Department.

The NGOs were registered with the industries and social welfare departments of the provincial government.

“Repeated notices were issued to the NGOs to submit their registration documents and they failed to do so,” said Atta.

The official added that the more than 4,000 NGOs were operating in Balochistan.

"NGOs need to be scrutinised and checked", Amjad Rasheed, a development expert based in Quetta said.

The development expert added that some NGOs were doing good work and they need to be encouraged to better the socio-economic indicators in the province.

The scrutiny was launched by the provincial government after the implementation of NAP. During the verification process, it was found that most NGOs merely existed on paper.

In 2015, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had said that no NGO working against the country's national interest will be allowed to continue its work in Pakistan.
