RAHIM YAR KHAN: Two workers were killed and another two injured late on Thursday in a boiler’s blast at the Jamal Din Wali (JDW) Sugar Mills, 39 kilometres from Rahim Yar Khan.

JDW Sugar Mills General Manager Rana Nasim Ahmed told Dawn the baskets of a refined centrifugal machine were being replaced when a basket fell into an electrical panel. This resulted in the blast.

He said safety and work parameters were being followed but the unfortunate incident occurred.

He said an inquiry had been initiated into the incident. He confirmed two casualties but denied any injury.

The deceased were Muhammad Farooq, of Sadiqabad, and Akram Abbasi, of Liaqatpur. Farooq died at the scene while Abbasi died on way to the Shaikh Zayed Medical College Hospital.

A source at the mills said the blast occurred in the refinery unit and there were no proper arrangements for workers safety and social security.

The mill is jointly owned by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Jahangir Tareen and PPP leader Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood.
