NEW DELHI: Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has directed the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to renew the passport of an allegedly abused Indian woman married to a Pakistani man, and facilitate her return, reports said on Wednesday.
They said Mohammadi Begum, who hails from Telangana, was living with her husband in Sialkot. She complained to her parents that she was being harassed and beaten up by her husband and in-laws and that she wanted to come back to India.
The woman’s father Mohammad Akbar appealed to Ms Swaraj who, in turn, asked officials of the Indian High Commission to meet Ms Begum.
On Monday, Ms Swaraj posted on Twitter that the officials met Ms Begum and she had expressed her desire to return to India.
Following this, Telangana’s Majlis Bachao Tehreek spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan posted the video of a telephone conversation between Ms Begum and her mother, in which she allegedly said she was beaten up and threatened by her husband for informing the Indian mission.
Mr Khan also mentioned that Ms Begum’s husband married her by claiming that he was an Omani national but has been keeping her in ‘captivity’ in Pakistan for the past 15 years.
“Mohammadi Begum said that she has faith in Allah and the Indian government, especially in Smt Sushma Swaraj, MEA and the Indian Embassy officials in Pakistan, that they had assured her that as soon as her passport is renewed she will be transferred to Mumbai and then to Hyderabad,” Mr Khan said.
It was not clear if the woman has retained her Indian nationality or become a Pakistani citizen.

Most women whow have no or very little formal education will spend their entire life in a unhappy or abusive marriage because they either have no income source or feel responsible for the welfare of their children or are not aware of any legal or social option.
This is way a lot of 'religious' organization don't want the girls to study, they give a lot of reasons mostly believed by people who feel that a educated woman will find them unappealing as a life partner.
So they bomb schools ment for girls, attack girls that go to school and actively speak to prevent the rise of professional women in any sort of economic activity.

Most of Indians wedding with a Pakistani man is OK; but they don't want to live in Pakistan. One prominent example is Sania Mirza. So, that man may have claim to be Omani living temporarily in Pakistan to get married with the girl.

Marriage is a necessary evil and a curse in Pakistan , the woman days of suffering starts as soon as the Valima ends. The in-laws become out-laws and the husband soon join them. This is not only in poor families but also in rich and educated families too. Because the culture is so messed up. Parents should educate their daughters and put them in some carrier so they can get a good job. That only can shut the mouth of the husband and the in-laws.

A note to parents who marry off their daughter to a stranger just because he claims to have a high paying job in some far off foreign land. I have been a close witness to a number of these marriages that ended sadly invariably for the girl. Your children are your most precious asset, keep them close to your heart as much as you can. Do not get allured by rosy scenarios or pelf being touted and tossed around. He may say he is an engineer when he is a bicycle mechanic or claim to be a restaurant owner when he is a dishwasher. If she is not happy she have the right to go back to parents. She is complaining after 15 years and there should be inquiry about allegations before she leaves. @PAYAL Gandhi There are ten of thousands of women in India abused by their husbands, in-laws on one pretext or the other but this is a special case for Sushma that tells us that she is awake and not sleeping at her job.

We expect that Pakistani Government will respond favourably respect to the Human Rights of the lady in accordance with international conventions and be persuaded by our Foreign Minister's appeal to repatriate her.

@KASHMIR GUY I am Kashmiri and I, along with the majority of Kashmiris, am perfectly happy, free and have the opportunity to do & be whatever I want as opposed to the short sighted militants and leaders of organisations who are unable to see the wood for the trees.

I blame the parents of this poor woman for her wooes. They married her off ostensibly to a Omani purely for self greed. Never mind their daughters well being. Now they are crying foul.

@jamshed Sad to see you defend such a crime with deflection. It is this mindset that has denied justice to millions of Pakistani woman that suffer daily at the hands of abusive husbands with no government help. Please change your mindset. We need to fight this disease in our society.
