An infant who was kidnapped from a government hospital on the outskirts of Karachi two days ago was recovered Friday, Orangi Town police officials told Dawn.

Karachi-West Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Nasir Aftab said the Orangi Town police raided the Afghan Basti area near Sohrab Goth on the outskirts of the metropolis and recovered the newborn.

Police also arrested 11 suspects, including four women, over kidnapping charges, Aftab added.

A woman named Musarat Anwar Khan allegedly abducted the baby from Sindh Government Qatar Hospital on March 22, the SSP said.

Khan then allegedly sold the newborn to another woman, identified as Nadia, for Rs15,000, who is accused of selling the boy to a childless couple for Rs135,000, the senior police officer said.

The senior police official said that the police was able to trace the suspected kidnappers with the help of footage obtained from the CCTV cameras installed in the hospital.

He added that the raid was conducted based on information the police obtained from Khan.

The suspects are being interrogated and an investigation is underway.
