Rangers take Dr Asim Hussain, former petroleum minister and chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, into custody from his office in Clifton.

Aug 27, 2015

The paramilitary force informs an antiterrorism court (ATC) that Dr Hussain was detained under a 90-day preventive detention for questioning after receiving information relating to his involvement in terror financing and misappropriation of funds for supporting terrorism and criminal activities.

Nov 25, 2015

Rangers hand Dr Hussain over to the police after lodging a case against him and other political leaders for allegedly treating and harbouring militants and gang members at the North Nazimabad and Clifton branches of his hospital.

The ATC administrative judge hands the former minister over to the police custody on physical remand.

Police and Rangers appear to be at the loggerheads with each other when the IO informs the administrative judge that the police released Dr Hussain under Section 497 (II) of the CrPC while the Rangers prosecutor contends that enough evidence existed against the former minister to try him. Meanwhile, NAB takes over Dr Hussain’s custody and obtains a remand from an accountability court for an investigation into corruption charges.

The ATC administrative judge throws out the IO’s report regarding Dr Hussain’s release and sends the case to the ATC-H for trial by observing that prima facie sufficient incriminating evidence was available against him and co-accused to connect them with the case.

After spending around five-and-a-half months in custody of different LEAs, an accountability court sends the former minister to prison on judicial remand.

Feb 25, 2016

NAB files a reference against Dr Hussain and others in an accountability court for the alleged corruption of over Rs460 billion by misusing his authority for getting plots allotted fraudulently and encroaching upon state land for expansion of his Dr Ziauddin Hospital, money laundering and receiving commission through the fertiliser cartel for the illegal curtailment of gas supply for exploitative price hike.

A two-judge bench of the Sindh High Court issues a split order on Dr Asim Hussain’s bail applications in two corruption references.
