Mardan Police on Sunday arrested seven more suspects in connection with the lynching of Mashal Khan, a 23-year-old student who was attacked by a vigilante mob after being accused of blasphemy earlier this week, police officials said.
The number of suspects arrested in connection with the tragic incident has increased to 22, police added.
Three amongst the seven suspects arrested were identified with the help of CCTV cameras, police officials said.
After being arrested, the suspects were presented before an Anti-Terrorism Court, police said. They were handed over to the police on physical remand for one day.
Earlier today, Inspector General Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Salahuddin Khan Mehsud presided over a meeting regarding the incident at the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Office in Mardan, a press release issued by the police said.
DIGP Mardan Mohammad Alam Shinwari told the meeting that investigation into the incident was progressing at a fast pace, the statement added.
The DIG briefed present officers regarding Khan's death, police said.
"Several of the nominated suspects have been arrested," the statement quoted the DIG as saying.
The IGP Mehsud appreciated the performance of the police, and said that the investigation is moving in the right direction, the statement read.
He advised the police to arrest the remaining suspects and proceed with the investigation with transparency and neutrality, according to the press release.
The meeting was attended by District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed, SP investigation and officials of the CTD.

But the tension was going on 3 days before the death of Mashal Khan in the university and police and university administration were well aware of the proceeding which was leading to this unfortunate incident. Why they took action well in time to avert this ugly incident ????

If authorities have to arrest half of the University students, they should. All of them must be severely punished. They are NOT Muslims but beasts.

Once again state failed to save innocent life. Police is the main culprit who were just 5 min away from the university campus. The whole incedent took 2 hours...one doesn't need einstine brain to understand..

I dont know much about the judicial lock up system in Pakistan but in foreign countries, specially in developled countries, all those caught will be kept in custody on seperate locations, with absolutely all sorts of connection broken with their friends or family or outside world unless the investigation is 100% complete. For special cases, special orders can be obtained from the magistrate. Each person kept seperate, each person to be investigated seperately and see if their statements tally or not? Who encouraged them to commit this crime? What was the motive? Who are the other people they know were in the crowd? etc etc. One by one, you will be able to find the names of all the thousands of people that were involved. When they give names, you have to catch them too. They will give links to others and so on.

@simons fredricks: An ideal approach to investgating crime that works well in civilised countries where law and order is respected and applied vigorously. Pakistan is uniquely excluded from those civilised countries. In pakistan, the police works with criminals, judges work with lawyers, investigating officers work with both the criminals and their victims. I saying this from my recent personal experience. Integrity of the serving professionals in our institutions lacking. When our professionals realise they have a duty to perform for which they are engaged problems considered solve.

Mashal was murdered because he strongly criticised the University management for mismanaging the affairs.So the Management decided to eliminate Mashal. The entire Management the CM and those Policemen who watched this murder and did nothing must be taken as suspects and tried in court of Law.

This barbaric murder of an enlightened young man is a sign of a society trapped in darkness due to the deep rooted issues because of the state's failure to curtail the activities of religious based ventures, promoting ignorance and spreading hate against anyone who do not comply with their version of the narrative. The delay in condemning this abhorrent crime by the prime minister of the country is a telling sign of the indecision when it comes of dealing with such matters. The state need to urgently emplace measures to tackle the threat from the ignorance and extremism before its too late if it isn't already.

Easier said then done. You cannot arrest people on the basis of suspicion that something might happen in the future. It's easier to put the blame on someone.

Pakistan administrative system needs leadership structure. Education system needs to bring leadership qualities. The British were succesful because they copied the administrative structure of the great Mughuals. We used to have effective Commissioners, Deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners. Now they have been relegated to administrative officers with diminished responsibility. Police system has collapsed, party leaders appoint public servants, like IGs. Good PM will know what to do, not Mr N or Mr Z.
