In light of the Supreme Court ruling on the Panama Papers case, the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) on Saturday gave an ultimatum to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif: resign within a week, or face a lawyers' movement bigger than the one that followed ex-chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry's ouster in 2007.
The demand comes days after the Panama Papers case verdict was announced, directing that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) be instituted to investigate the prime minister and his sons for alleged corruption.

However, opposition parties have expressed reservations on the integrity of a probe against the premier carried out by officials that the PM himself has appointed.
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), PPP and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) have all demanded that the PM resign until the JIT has completed its investigation.
LHCBA President Zulfiqar Chaudhry, vice-president Rashid Lodhi, secretary Amir Saeed Raan and finance secretary Zaheer Butt presented their demand for the PM's resignation at a press conference. Chaudhry stressed that if the prime minister does not relinquish his post within a week, they will launch a movement bigger than the lawyers' movement for restoration of the deposed judges.
"The [Panama Papers case] decision is unanimous," said Chaudhry, referring to Thursday's verdict.
"Throughout the world, public office holders implicated in the Panama [Papers] scandal have relinquished their posts, but the prime minister is adamant to stay in power," he complained, emphasising that the bar association's demand for PM's resignation was legitimate and fair.
"How can officers under the PM conduct a fair investigation into the PM's alleged corruption?" asked Chaudhry.
Rashid Lodhi, vice president of the bar association said: "This is the first time such a high-profile case of corruption went up to the Supreme Court and some pertinent questions were raised by the court regarding the PM's money-trail. These questions can not be put ignored."

He said the apex court has rejected the prime minister's claims, and for that reason, Sharif has lost the moral authority to stay in power.
"The SC verdict has, in effect, indicted the prime minister," said Amir Saeed Raan, secretary of the LHCBA.
"Two of the five judges have made it clear that the PM is not 'Sadiq' and 'Ameen'," he stated, adding that the prime minister should have the courage to resign, instead of letting his own appointees investigate him for alleged corruption.
The legal fraternity in Pakistan flexed its muscles back in 2007, when ex-president Pervez Musharraf ousted the then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The lawyers' movement that followed, gained enough momentum to result in the reinstatement of the deposed judiciary.
The LHCBA representatives stressed that their demand must not be seen as to be politically motivated.

I'm no fan of Nawaz Sharif, but this is both wrong and meaningless. It is wrong because only a court of law can order the PM to resign, not threats and blackmail. It is meaningless because the PM's appointees will not become disloyal just because he has stepped aside. Mafia and gang bosses run their empires even from prison. This is outrageous. Opposition and their anarchist cronies on pumped up charges have been trying to effect unconstitutional change in the government for over 4 years now. From 'rigging' in 2013 elections to 35 punctures to having irrefutable evidence of PM and his family's corruption they have been proved wrong every time. 90% of bye-elections they lost. With 2018 elections just round the corner - they know that they are going to lose again so again trying to go for an extra-constitutional change. People of Pakistan have rejected them again and again and will reject them again.

In 2007, Pakistani lawyers's movement to remove a military dictator, Pervaiz Musharaf, surprised the world. To my knowledge, never in the history of the world the lawyers had spearheaded a movement for the restoration of democracy. No political philosopher ever envisaged a scenario where the lawyers will be the vanguard of the movement to remove a dictator. Luckily, the lawyers succeeded . They were on the right side of history. Now, in 2017, the lawyers have a chance to make history again. They are the only hope to remove a dishonest Prime Minister and his lackluster cronies. I hope that the lawyers succeed again. Good Luck!

Nawaz Sharif does not have the integrity to step down as that will mean all his cronies would have to follow suit. A sitting prime minister has to be held accountable to the highest standard as he or she occupies the seat of the highest responsibility. If he or she has misused their office to gain special privileges at the expense of the public purse and then have hidden their assets in offshore accounts as in the case of Nawaz Sharif and family then the courts should not let this go unpunished. If they do they have failed in their duty. The institutions who are supposed to carry out the investigations against the PM have already failed to in an impartial manner and have already been sold out so how can they now be trusted to do their duty?

Those criticizing the LHCBA should remember that to protest peacefully is the right of every citizen. And launching a movement for demanding PM's resignation does not mean they are not respecting supreme court judgment. In fact, they are facilitating the impartial implementation of SC judgment, because with PM at the head of the JIT a fair and impartial investigation cannot take place.

I went through this historical judgement in detail. Out of five, 2 judges have categorically disqualified PM Nawaz, and the other 3 judges giving their adverse remarks about PM, are totally unsatisfied with PM explanation about his business/ assets/property, and consequently, ordered for the formation of JIT to investigate.
Now, I am unable to understand why PML-N declares their victory?? Do they think that they will take a report of their own choice from JIT??? impossible and sham on the entire party for their fake victory claims.

Especially when everything is out in the open and only requires common sense and basic understanding. Building a £500+ million empire in the UK at a tender age is no joke. Infact I believe it is next to impossible unless you have substantial means for huge investment in the first place. Still the chances of losses are high. So as a common man with common sense. I dont believe that his wealth has been accumulated through legitimate means. Not even a penny. And besides if he steps down for 2 months, it will be politically beneficial for him, if he feels he is Sadiq and ameen and has all the evidence to prove his innocence, What is he afraid of? He will be re instated when cleared. My employees can never question me when theyr jobs, increments, promotions and lives depend on me. Unless im no longer directly their boss during an investigation.

@ I2I. i am intrigued by your choice of words 'frame charges against a PM'. If there was anything similar or even close against imran khan they would have black mailed him successfully. The only reason IK, JI have come so far in their resilience is that corruption charges cant be reciprocated on both individuals. These properties initially came into light when Rahman Malik made a case against the sharifs. I think he did'nt pursue it to this length as he knew his party would have to stop at certain point which in layman's term is called muk muka

Demand from the legal fraternity is unjust and whatever the instruction given in supreme court decision must be fulfilled in Toto. There should be investigation by JIT, however decision of changing elected leader should be in the hand of people through ballot rather than agitation. As compare to Zardari and company PM is not so corrupt. PM also brought a lot of improvement in the system if political upheaval took place it will negatively impact economic progress and completion of energy projects which are in progress at present.

The claim that the movement of lawyers would be bigger than the earlier one of 2007 is not true. The lawyers across the country were united for restoration of their Chief Justice. However, this time, the lawyers who have affiliation with PML-N would not join. This would create a divide amongst the lawyers fraterniry. I don't expect the same unity this time.

@ahaq : Let us see if SCBA lawyers joins too. NS is very lucky, surely not all lawyers will join the movement. Again this is a hot summer season. To come out of houses for longer period outside will tire them. The movement would never get strength as it needed for such a tough task. Just wait and see . I feel, within 10 days or so it would start weakening and by the end of one month it will fizzle out completely.which will strengthen NS instead of weakening him. More popularity for NS and hence good for him for 2018 election.

If Lawyers don't respect court then who will, One fail to understand where this nation is heading to. Let JIT finishes its work and lets SC decide next action. In this way, we will strengthen our legal system and if SC makes a decision without influence it will help the nation in future.

We must be dead honest and very much judicious towards PM Nawaz to prove that we are completely neutral and unbiased when we discuss PM Nawaz who is somewhat under hot waters. Normally when we admire we even cross the extreme and likewise if condemn then there is no limit to touch dirt and filth. I must say very loudly that PM Nawaz must have done well for Pakistan, not necessarily as good as his ministers boasted off, but nevertheless he must be given credit where due and not otherwise. Excellent timing by the LHCBA. Nawaz Sharif is not honest and trustworthy as the judges have observed. He must step down if there is to be an impartial investigation and confirmation of this observation by the JIT.

Thank you lawyers. There was this great feeling growing that no one stands with the common man of Pakistan but at least our lawyers have their morals intact. I hope the lawyers of all the other high courts also join this movement. Entire nation would back IK's stance, his party and all other parties seeking PM's resignation, the two judges who disqualified the PM and now these lawyers who are known to have run great powerful movements in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif's employees can't investigate him and it would be joke if the JIT continues with Nawaz as PM.

@i2i I think as per your justification, NS should have sued the Panama papers due to which his credibility has been tarnished. This action would have saved his credibility and if proved false make money by sueing the papers and all those who claimed him to be involved on the issue, this would have saved SC time and opposition case also.

If PM in Pakistan will start resigning on the demand of opposition or his opponents I believe no PM can stay on the seat for more than one month. Let complete him his tenure we should rid of PM through elections and not by undemocratic forces who don't want to allow any public leader to
come strong as a strong PM will ultimate control the undemocratic forces

It is most unfortunate that the Bar ASSOCIATION does not realise the gravity of the situation
and is encouraging people to play into the hands of elements who do not wish Pakistan well. Maybe
calling an early election is a better option, or something other than chaos and confusion of
of MOBOCRACY, which will only result in death and destruction.

@Khurram : These lawyers have some conscience, they are NOT doing anything against the Panamagate verdict. They are giving the same message to Nawaz Sharif as the verdict gave, but are using a very direct and common man's language. Please try to read the 500-page verdict again.

Majority of judges did not suggest resignation of pm in the verdict, so it will be unessary to to ask for his resignation because people did not vote for him to resign under any circumstances and he will not do so and so don't waste your energy and time. The decision will be made in 2018 general election as it always happens in any civilsed country.

I hate this, every one is acting like a great politician or army field martial general, why over Govt allow so many union sorts because that is the reason we always in search of internal peace, all advocates should do their job and that's all, why are they and every one is so involved only for making problems. It would be much better if they all help police to investigate pending cases.

The verdict of Supreme Court of Pakistan.is not split. It is unanimous that Prime Minster is accuesd of corruption He is treated guilty unless he proves himsel innocent beyond reasonable doubt before the commission comprised of powerful istitutions of country to which the Prime Minister is Chief Executive.
Thete is every likelihood that PM during investigation may misuse hix official.position. Hence in order to make the investigation transpatent and independent of influence the Prime Minister must resign this is essential in the interest of justice!
