The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh's (UP) Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) led government has announced an end to holidays for Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Jummat-ul-Wida, and 15 other public holidays, BBC Urdu reported.
The announcement was made on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Twitter account on Tuesday.
Besides the aforementioned holidays, days off to celebrate the birth of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Chandar Shekhar, and Chaudhry Charan Singh have also been ended.
"On the birthdays of great personalities, educational institutes should organize assemblies of at least an hour long informing students of their personality, achievements and motivational teachings," the Chief Minister's office declared in a series of tweets.
It is important to note that CM Yogi Adityanath had previously hinted at abolishing holidays for celebrating the birthdays of personalities.
"If the purpose of these holidays is to remember the great personalities and to motivate people, then why don't we open schools for two hours on such occasions and inform the kids who these great people are?", he questioned an audience while speaking at an event to celebrate the birthday of the Indian constitution's architect.
A great majority of the holidays canceled by Yogi Adityanath's government were implemented by the former Akhilesh Yadav government.
Currently, there are 42 public holidays in UP, out of which 17 celebrate the birthdays of notable personalities.

The UP government had 42 holidays out of which 17 are given on death or birth anniversaries of various prominent figures. Number of holidays is being reduced to increase productivity.
This move is not about any religion. Of the 15 holidays being canceled, only 2 are related to Islam, 13 are related to Hindu personalities. Also, the government is encouraging teaching about these personalities instead of wasting the day siting at home.

Already govt employees scratching their balls at work becoming lazy doing nothing plus so many holidays. All the work is being done by private firms with minimum holidays and less salary. @M. Siddique Major holidays of all religions are national and state holidays - So Christmas, Eid, Bakrid, Diwali, etc. are indeed holidays for all. In addition, states also have their own festivals and holidays. E.g., Karnataka which celebrates Ugadi, Moharram in UP. In addition, there are a holidays that you take if you are minority and it is a religious occasion for you. So if you are Jain you might wish to be off on Mahavir's birthday. Your accrued leave is not affected.
So you see India has policies that are meant to please all, but in UP this process had gone too far, like Valmiki Jayanti - the birthday of Sage Valmiki, put there for votes from a specific community.

Even USA does not have Good Friday holiday but in India there is Good Friday holiday for all.

I live in Wisconsin, USA. we have a total of 10 Federal Holidays and some of them just do not apply to the State. The State of Wisconsin has a total of 8 holidays. May be America should start producing more heroes who are worthy of holidays to celebrate them.

102 holidays for 52 weekends + 42 Holidays. Total holidays 144 in 365 days. This makes about 40% of the work days lost without any work done. If a reasonable yardstick is used to increase workdays there is no reason to find fault with it. This will involve withdrawal of holidays relating to all religions and groups. Only those who want UP to remain backward will oppose it.

I agree to level that holidays given for birthdays of personalities should be canceled.
But on religious occasions the last hour can be used to distribute sweets or gifts to students who return to their homes happily with these gifts and cherish the day.
There are several donation institutions linked to these schools who distribute free gifts.

@Zak Eid Milad is important for muslims and how it is important for 80% of hindus in U.P. Mr. Yogi canceeld 13 hindu holidays and 2 muslim holidays and this is called true secularism. Unlike Pakistan there is no holidays for Christain and Hindus till recently but muslims have 32 holidays every year. Pakisan is notorius for descrimiantion for other religions. Hindu and other minority population reduced from 22 % to 1 % after 70 year of partition.

In all Muslim festivals there is Government holidays, in private sector if there is no holiday for organization, there is special leave provision for Muslim employees. Moreover two major Hindu festivals Rakshabandhan & Bhai Dooj, there is no Government holidays. So open your mind

In India declaring a holiday became vote catching exercise during Congress regime. When regional parties gained ground and won in states the regional leaders accelerated the practice. Starting from Mayawati who belonged to so called backward class declared holidays for Dalit icons special days (birth days etc). Mulayam Singh on the other hand wanted to project himself the champion of Muslim cause and welfare. To earn and win their votes he declared holidays for Muslim "holy" days. And this is not only UP but in other states too there are too many holidays. Unlike other developed countries where there are fewer public holidays, India (or may be Pakistan too) fancies this practice purely to win support of a particular cast or religion.

@Dawn, guys the yogi's picture you use, is with a specific agenda. people will make a impression about him.
You can be neutral by changing it with other poses where he is helping people, being a CM he walks up to poor people who come to seek his help in his office. he consoles poor people including muslim divorce women.
I am not a supporter of yogi but knowing you for long time, I can expect this neutrality from you.

42 Holidays in a year ? That is huge with two days weekend . Thus total working time = 52 weeks x 5 = 260 - 42 = 212 days Most government departments & public sectors provide 15 days casual leave + 30 days PL (Privilege Leave) making it only 212-45 = 177 days of working . India HAS TO match with the developed world that has 8 to 10 national holidays/year + 21 days of annual leave = 260- 30 = 230 days of clear working.
I think across the nation; the # of holidays need to be reduced to 15 maximum
4- Diwali + 3 for Eid (Bakri and Ramazan + Id ul Fitr ) + 1 Christmas (25th Dec) + 15th August (Independence day )+ 26th January (Republic Day) = 10 + 5 other holidays for each state's choice to respect local & harvest festivals like Holi, Baisakhi (pick any 5 most popular in each state ) and that is maximum 15 + 30 days annual leave .
The step by UP government is in right direction. Increase the productivity with minimum 8 hours of working excluding lunch break for each working day.

@DEV You are right. There should not be more than 10 holidays even that should be cafeteria approach. But when you give Holidays on Ram Navmi Krishna Janamashmi and cut holiday on Eid Milad then it is communalism

HI Would prefer to work for half day on all festivals & holidays and remaining half day I would prefer to celebrate with my co-workers. This will help me to know there religion and rituals. We will get more bonding among co-workers at workplace. This may also increase productivity.

Good decision. Why there should be a holiday for leaders birthday ? In case of Diwali, Christmas or Ramzan we organize poojas, prayers and functions for which we have work in organizing the same. Similarly, its a celebration and meeting our relatives.
Nothing of this sort holds for a Leaders Birthday. Hence its not necessary.
Oh My God, We are losing holidays and thats a sad thing personally :)

Their stated aim seems encourageous if followed such as "On the birthdays of great personalities, educational institutes should organize assemblies of at least an hour long informing students of their personality, achievements and motivational teachings"

PM of UP shows lack of interest in own his religion and fail to pay other religions some respect! Religion is a personal matter of any person. First, all the election was faked in India especially in UP under the umbrella of Modi team, now respect of all religion is in dangeour in India. I am afraid the future of minorities i.e roman christians, sikhs and muslims in India.

good. Indian kids of all religions, need less religion and more education time, free of birthdays of personalities. These personalities birthdays (they are Hindu, sikh, muslim etc) can be taught about on that day instead of giving kids a day off to play cricket or watch TV. Good initiative inn India.
good attempt to ensure religion asnd education are not mixed. Religion should be a private matter.

Somehow sounds like a good idea not to declare holidays on these days and educate people and children more about these great personalities. As long as there is no discrimination in cancelling holidays of a particular religion's personalities.

@Sohail Gem Wazir Please note the only Hindu Holiday in Pakistan is Guru Nanak Birthday, and if you count that as a Sikh event, there is none! Other non-Muslim holidays in Pakistan are Easter and Christmas, and only for Christians. The list of holidays cancelled by Yogi Adityanath contains only 3 Muslim holidays out of 15 in the list! So much for those reading anti- Secular motives into a reduction of holidays in UP.
