KARACHI: Arambagh and Nishtar Clubs earned full points by getting the better of their respective opponents on the opening day of the second Essa Lab basketball tournament which commenced at the former’s floodlit court on Saturday evening.

Playing on their home court, Arambagh notched up an exciting 41-33 victory over Malir Trojans Club.

The match had many ups and downs. The winners had a jittery start losing the first quarter 4-8 but bounced back to win the next 17-4 to lead 21-12 at half time.

Maintaining the pace Arambagh won the third quarter by slender 8-7 margin before losing the fourth 12-14.

Ishaq stole the limelight for the winners by finishing in double figures with 13 and was followed by Fazeel and Zain-ul-Abedin seven and six respectively.

Though Imran top-scored with 16 but could not steer his team to victory. He was assisted by Yasir and Abrar six apiece.

In the other match, Nishtar Club outpaced Neighbour­hood Club 51-39.The latter are appearing in a local event after a long layoff.

The trio of Shabbar (12), Saifullah (11) and Talha Amjad (9) paved the team to success.

Ali Ahmed scooped 19 but in vain. He was assisted by Hamza and Hammad six apiece.

Five teams — Nishtar Club, One Unit Club, Arambagh Club, Neighbourhood Club and Malir Trojans – are competing in the event which is played on the singe league basis.

Top two teams of the league will qualify to play the final on May 22.
