Former cricketer and chief selector of the Pakistan Cricket Board Aamer Sohail was recently seen criticising Sarfaraz Ahmad on TV for allegedly refusing to dedicate Pakistan's win against Sri Lanka to Javed Miandad, which came on the cricketing legend's birthday.
During a post-match analysis after the Pak-Sri Lanka showdown, Sohail spewed vitriol against Ahmad, saying that the new skipper has "nothing to be smug about; he just became captain."
"If you do something wrong, we will point it out to you; if you do something right, we will tell you that too; and if you do something wrong in an attempt to do something right, we will point that out to you as well," Sohail said, apparently in defence of retired cricketers' frequent commentary on the Pakistan side's recent performances.
He added that if the show's host were to ask him who won the match for Sarfaraz, his answer would be: "prayers and God; as I cannot name the facilitators of those prayers."
"You [Sarfaraz] have done nothing special, this match was won for you, we all know how things work," Sohail said.
Once the clip of Sohail's diatribe went viral on TV and social media, there was considerable backlash about his comments. The 'facilitators' statement in particular was widely perceived as an accusation of foul play in the win.
In response to the anger, Sohail decided to 'clarify' his position on Samaa TV, saying: "My comments were made after I heard reports of Sarfaraz's refusal to dedicate his performance against Sri Lanka to Miandad and him saying that Miandad criticises the team too much."
"The other thing I said was that the facilitators of the win cannot be named; however I said nothing about match-fixing or any other foul play — my statement was misunderstood," Sohail said.
If Sarfaraz Ahmad actually made those comments about Miandad could not be verified.

Prayers don't win matches, if that was the case, Pakistan will never lose any matches.

i really like aamir sohail but it seems this time he has crossed all limits. he cannot stand that a captain from karachi is performing well.. he still wants to bring shoaib malik as captain if he is given power. like nihal hashmi he is trying to clarify his remarks . what he said was loud and clear and he accused of foul play and match fixing in clear words. and the worst part is that he has accused the opponent team and for this he could be dragged in international court too if those teams file a complain against him and ask him to prove what he said ....

Pakistan cricket,and the organization have no synchronization ,it has been observed that always the experts appointed for services,are misfit,that is the reasons they failed at real juncture.Considering the comment of X captain Amir sohail,that pakistan defeated Srilanka is a matter of chance,not the effort of sarfaraz---- shame.Be positive,always keep the away the professionalism from nepotism.At least players should have the confidence to be retain in team.For forthcoming India match,you people have to control your nerves because it is the game of Mental toughness rather than Cricketing skills

Respect is due to Amir sohail and other senior players but his remarks were way too hard and meant to be taken so as he attributed the win to some 'hidden' facilitators, he also refused to disclose.
Dont know whether Sarfraz complained about Miandad but even then such remarks by Amir are untimely and uncalled-for.

Although Pakistan played superb against England but people who have even a little knowledge of cricket can tell that win against Sri Lanka had luck factor involved with 2 catches dropped of Sarfraz and a couple of run outs missed. One could easily see how difficult it was to play even simple shots.

In Pakistan, no one can take criticism no matter how appropriate it is. We become defensive and perhaps over defensive. It was so nice of Amir Suhail to suggest that the team should dedicate this win to the legend on his birthday. What is wrong with that?. If prayers were the only match-winning tactic, Pakistan would not have lost a single match, ever. Let us be realistic and take religion out of the game, and politics too. Hard work and hardwork alone wins matches. India is a great team and we are lucky to be playing them in the finals. Moments of good cricket will not be enough. Being champions requires hard work. Let us try our best as we can only do that.

If Amir has so respect for Miandad, then where was he when Waseem Akram threw him out, why amir never protested when shahid afridi raise bat to hit miandad, why amir had never been unpleased when miandad threw out as couch never restored, why amir never has no word to share with public when Imran khan did not let him to surpass the world record in test cricket.. These are those huge moments in sport where, backs to the wall & against all odds, a team has managed to come together, fight back against superior opponents and claim their place in a high stakes final!

If you counts catches given by Tendulkar dropped than probably you will find Tendulkar has few if any century. There are many batsmen who were dropped first ball, and then went on to score century. So, would you discard that century from their name?
Fact is that, team Pakistan was playing team SL, will all faults in the teams. If SL misfield or dropped catches so did Pakistan. If SL dropped catch (and that happened after Sarfraz made over 40 and win was eminent), than that is not fault of Sarfraz. Runs Sarfraz made takes into account all faults in SL fielding. If fielder misfield resulting in four, that four still counts as four. Dropping catches is part of cricket.

Strange, you don't demand someone to dedicate a match. It is done when the captain along with team feel the affection and respect. Also Miandad did great service to pakistan cricket as a player and was an exceptionally talented player. There is no need to drag his name into this affair and certainly no need for forced dedication. Don't embarrass Miandad and don't disturb the team at this crucial time when they are preparing for the final.

We could say the same thing about India's victory over Pakistan in the World Cup when Sachin was dropped if I am not mistaken 3 times. This is part and parcel of the game. You cannot take a victory away by these frivolous comments. India won that semifinal and so did Pakistan against Sri Lanka.

Aamer sohail is a former chief selector who lobbied to become chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Biard but was not considered for the job. he has an xe to grind against the current PCB.
Regarding his allegations of match fixing, unfortunately in Pakistan it has become the norm to shoot your mouth off on television without any proof. The bigger the lie the better the ratings for the channel and the more money they pay you to appear on TV. Aamer Sohail's mentor and former Captain Imran Khan is trying to keep his political career afloat by telling the big lie on television.

I think it is fair and squre Team effort. The individual like Amir Junaid and Sarfraz stood up against against Sri Lanka. Against England it was Hassan Ali all over. The new kids in the town are Raees and opening pair. What is becoming obsolete is Shahzad, Shoaib and Babar Azam technique. Sarfraz is street fighter so let it be. He is Karachiate and it suit his style.

For me the winning Againd ENG beat most of the wins without any gaint of a player on the team calculated Harness English man on their own soil and terms.
This I compare to 1977 Pak team of Wi one of best WI team.

Amir Sohail is not a legend at all. PCB must sue him for his comments. He always misbehaves with other commentators as well while he used to do commentary. I can't imagine any single individual can say anything wrong for Sarfaraz who is doing a great team. A #8 ranked team who was on the edge of disqualification from Champions Trophy on the last year's deadline is now playing final. Amir Sohail..passed on some hint that everyone shouldve picked up. No doubt we have seenp some good performance by youngsters but the way sirilanka and England lost; I would not call it a clean ..distinguishable victory.. alot of flukes and a lot of surprised drop catches that coudlve changed the outcome of The match.. The bookies were calling for a Pakistan and India final before the tournament even started.. wonder if it's all scripted to generate money for the ICC...i mean u just can't throw teams like Australia., kiwiz, South Africa out of the tournament first round without any competition?..Also our players are youngsters winning one match or two doesn't make them heros.. a batsmen of ours struggles to make a century and than celebrates like he is conquered the world where as teams like India., Australia and others centuries are just a norm. We need to set our competitive bar up .. and learn how to take constructive critisim. It only makes u better when u stay down to earth.

Aamir Sohail, you don't right to call anyone arrogant. We all know how arrogant you were and are. By the way Sarfraz was the captain of the under 19 team that won championship. So we all know his ability. He can be the next great captain like IK, Miandad and Misbah. You can criticize but it should be constructive. I have full respect for Mr. Sohail, however this is the time to encourage team members and to give them tips that may help build upon suggestions. I have once before mentioned about Umesh, Kumar and Bumra as a bowlers, kumar and umesh are fast and Bumrah is a tricky bowler. Then we have Jadeja and Ashwin, I am sure our team knows these two well, Batting watch Rohit, Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhawan, put pressure upon these four and you will succeed.

Some people open their mouth before they think. This is the case here too. Sohail has played cricket, and he knows always captain is responsible for wins and losses to the team, regardless of who did what individually. I think Sarfaraz is very capable player and confident captain. He needs all the support he can get at this point when there is a big final is coming up.
My advice to him ( Sohail ) is to keep your comments to yourself. If you can not say anything positive , don't say negative either. That is the need of the time.

Amir Sohail has been known for making controversial statements all his life. Instead of enjoying Pakistani victory and appreciating the performance of the team and its captain he is making controversial statements. You don't have to be an expert to see the smart field placing and bowling changes that Sarfraz had made in the game against England that contributed to the Pakistan success in that game. Mr. AS should know that without a good captain no team can win. He was a part of 1992 world cup winning team with great IK as captain. Everyone knows without IK's great leadership Pakistan would not have won that WC.

He never had good relations with his team mates. 1996 qtr final defeat and 1998 Lahore test defeat vs zimb were the lowest points in his career. his spat with ceo of pcb majid khan in 1998 which led to his ouster from the team. sohail should avoid these things now, talking for javed is nonsense.

Indian Cricket fan, and follower of Pakistan Cricket here. I totally disagree with both the content, and the intent of Sohail's comments. It is highly unlikely that England, SL, and RSA could have been persuaded to throw their games against Pakistan. True, SL dropped crucial catches, but they have been doing that consistently for a while now, it was not a one-off against Pakistan. Secondly, the timing, and the manner in which Sohail delivered his diatribe indicates a petty and spiteful state of mind. It is alarming that a former captain would speak like this when a team is 2 days away from a final. I hope the Pak team can put this behind them, and play well on Sunday. May the better team win.

I think Aamer want to have Captain of his own choice that is why he started a campaign against him.I am really embarrassed to read what Ganguly and Harbhajan said about him and of course praised Sarfraz.
At times Aamer has proved to be very immature, this is not the 1st time he has conducted in this manner. I remember the important match between Pakistan and India in Banglore (as I can recall) he lost temper and hits for a four after that started showing sign of anger to bowler and the next bowl sent him out side.

Why is Sohail so much concern about Javed Miandad 60th birthday? He should just worry about himself and stop making these wild allegations about the Pak team.
As ex captain and chief selector he should be providing positive vibes to the team not undermine with absurd claims. Pak team can do without ex players making negative comments about the team. If he wanted to make these comments couldn't he waited until tournament was over.

Fully agree with Imtiaz. Prayers don't win matches. Mind set, performance, positive attitude and Team work win matches. This is not the time to waste energy in irrelevant issues. Cheer up the youngsters for their performance.

Amir Sohail Sahab's comments are unfortunate, regrettable and un-called for.
At a time when the country should stand solidly behind the national team he has put his ego ahead of it.
I realize this is characteristic of him.

@Veeran : You will see a different media if Inidia lost the CT final to Pakistan. Indian media and public is 100 times vicious then you see in Pakistan. I hope you remember the mob arriving at Ganguly and Dhoni's houses after they lost some matches. That Is crazy.

I think Mr, Amer Sohail has played his wicket and now it's up to the young talent to prove their mettle. Such controversial statement demotivate the young. All senior players must motivate and encourage the team and avoid the negative statements.

Sohail was a dashing opener, but the only reason for his downfall was his anger management (or lack thereof) leading to bizarre outbursts. We all know how he had made a fool of himself in a World Cup match against India when batting aggressively, he had tried to berate the Indian bowler, and then was out on the next delivery. His fight with Wasim Bari had led to his ouster in cricket all together for at least 12 months after which he could never regain his batting prowess. This man has not matured one bit, even at this age.

Instead of criticising aamir sohail people should ask him to help investigate the possibility of match fixing. Hundreds of billions of rupees change hands in illegal betting and legal advertising when India and Pakistan play and the payments to commentators, curators,cleaners related to cricket is upheld by Indian viewership of an Indo pak match. I wouldn't be surprised if it was revealed that both India and pak were helped to reach final

If prayers don't win matches than how do you comprehend Pakistan team lost by 164 runs and come to beat the same #1 team and beat them by 180 runs. It is my belief on Pakistan team that I pray for them to win the match. sometimes it work other times it doesn't.

Mr. Amir Sohail has to bite the dust now. His comments and arrogant style was uncalled for. Mr. Sohail did not deliver anything while he was captain. What difference does it make if the match is dedicated to some one. No one remembers but the end result. Enjoy the win and prepare for next tournment.
