Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar has taken suo motu notice of the death of a traffic warden in Quetta, who was killed when a vehicle allegedly belonging to a Balochistan legislator ran him over earlier this month.
Before proceeding to perform Umrah, the chief justice ordered inspector general of police Balochistan to submit a report into the incident within three days.
Justice Nisar has also directed district police officer (DPO) Dera Ghazi Khan to ensure that no threat or pressure is exerted on the family of the deceased traffic police official.
Police on Saturday arrested MPA Abdul Majeed Achakzai and obtained his five-day remand for allegedly running over the traffic warden on a busy Quetta road last week.
The incident took place on June 20 when a fast-moving vehicle belonging to Achakzai hit and ran over the traffic warden, identified as Sub-Inspector Haji Attaullah Dashti, at the GPO Chowk. The warden suffered serious injuries and later died at hospital.
Initially, police registered a case of accident against unidentified people. But after the CCTV footage of the accident went viral on social media and was repeatedly shown by TV channels, Inspector General of Police, Balochistan, Ahsan Mehboob and other senior police officials decided to lodge a manslaughter case against the MPA of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.
Achakzai had also appeared on some TV channels and provided some justifications.
He admitted to driving the vehicle when the accident took place and also expressed his desire to settle the issue with the victim’s family as per tribal traditions. He expressed his willingness to pay the blood money to the deceased warden's family and compensation to an injured passer-by.
As the family of the late policeman lives in Dera Ghazi Khan, the MPA decided to go there along with tribal elders to meet them. However, he was arrested prior to his departure.
Achakzai was elected a member of the Balochistan Assembly in the 2013 elections from a Qila Abdullah constituency (PB-13).

How convinient first kill someone in broad day light n then take trible elders along, pay blood money at will n go free. Firstly, his driver licience needs to be checked to see validity, if no driver licience and/or expired this gentleman needs to be charged under panel code 302. Secondly, its a day light murder - we saw airconditioned police remand on TV - area SHO N DPO should be dismissed. Thirdly, he should come to court under chaned/handcuff. Lastly, just needs to be under Pakistan criminal code NOT tribal white wash. Just should be equal for everyone.

Knowing how our *system* works, the possibility of victims of such blatant murder/manslaughter cases, getting away with blood money that amounts to peanuts for such bigwigs should be removed.
Had there been no media hype, this MPA would not even have bothered to offer the blood money.
In fact, such cases should be considered and tried as terrorism. Because that's exactly what the ruling elite do by running over, killing/miming/destroying the ordinary citizens lives and property.

Had it not been for the CCTV cameras, the MPA would not even be held responsible as the Police under the thumb of the government had already registered rhe case against "unidentified persons". Is the family of the victim going to be threatened and pressured? But how would anyone know? Next week we shall have another atrocity and we shall all have moved on.

I can understand the applicability of qisaas (blood money) when an accident occurs. But in this instance, the driver hit the individual and ran away. Generally, there is a more strict punishment in most countries for a hit and run to serve as a deterrent from people running away from these accidents. There is generally mandatory jail time and fines. Why should this MPA get any less of a punishment? He thinks he can just buy off the family. Is Pakistani life so cheap?

This is one of the crucial decisions taken by the government at the right and the required time after the incident. I really appreciate this decision by the core of my heart, so do every Pakistani.
The government must ensure justice for the family of the victim in time and with no delay since it is a very critical matter. I'm also hopeful because both media and the common people through social media have supported this cause very much to their levels.

It is very sad that Traffic Police Warden died in the accident and Mr. Achakzai should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law. Mr. Achakzai should be punished in accordance with the law if he is found guilty of the crime. However, I don't believe a traffic accident should not be handled by the Supreme Court.

The reports about a compromise reached between the family and MPA is highly disturbing. According to reports the family of deceased will get his salary for rest of life and his son will get a government job if they cooperate with the MPA.
The very notion is Pakistan that if the rich killers reach to an agreement with the victim's family then court can't do anything is highly deplorable and is an evidence of injustice in this country.
Can the supreme court of Pakistan once and for all stand up for the poor Pakistanis and punish these killers regardless of these compromises?

Was the police giving an impression of being ignoramus, or having weighed the status of the two, decided to side the heavy weight? The logic behind the question by reasoning is that, did not the police know that there is a CCTV camera is in operation? Obviously, the CCTV camera had been placed there by the concerned government authority, and not by any other private entity!
Besides, why a case of an accident against unidentified people? Does it mean that the Legislator fled from the scene rather setting an example of being a law abiding citizen and helping an injured human being in need of urgent medical attention!
