SWABI: The Khyber Medical University, Peshawar, has asked the Gajju Khan Medical College (GKMC), Swabi, to furnish the status of its recognition by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) in order to process its case for affiliation with the KMU, sources said.

They said that the college’s affiliation was subject to the PM&DC recognition which had not been given as yet due to some deficiencies.

They said that the major issue being faced by the students, enrolled in the first batch, was the first year professional examination, which the KMU had planned for September next.

A letter No. 968/Dir/AA&QA/KMU/47-58 issued to the principal of the college from KMU’s registrar says: “Affiliation process of Gajju Khan Medical College has not yet completed with the Khyber Medical University, Peshawar.

The college still awaits recognition by PM&DC

You (principal) are requested to furnish the status of recognition of your college with PM&DC in order to process your case for affiliation with Khyber Medical University while completing all other required procedures.”

Sources said that the council had raised its reservations about some critical deficiencies in the college.

They said that the PM&DC inspection team visited the college on Jan 1 and pointed out deficiencies while calling for setting up purpose-built auditorium, upgradation of two lecture halls, faculty improvement in clinical sciences and upgradation of medical equipment, especially in the intensive care and radio diagnostics.

GKMC has been started in a makeshift building in Bacha Khan Medical Complex (BKMC), Shahmansoor, but the college had not yet acquired land for its own building.

The sources said that the government started admissions to GKMC on court directives and 85 students were enrolled without a proper hostel.

Now again, another batch would be inducted after entry test, but there are still no arrangements of hostel for the students.

Sources said that according to PM&DC rules the college principal was the chief executive of the attached teaching hospital and the clinical faculty would work under him.

However, the sources said that in GKMC on the directives of a minister the principal was asked to give administrative control of the teaching faculty to the medical superintendent of BKMC.

EXPLOSIVES SEIZED: District police have recovered 55 kilogrammes of explosives and 800 detonators from a car (LEA 5893) and arrested its driver identified as Lal Mohammad during checking on Swabi-Totali road, Swabi DSP Azhar Shah told mediapersons here on Thursday.

He said that the driver, who hails from Charsadda district, was currently living in Mardan. A case has been registered against him in the city police station.
