A senior civil judge in Islamabad, Muhammad Shabber Bhatti, on Monday sentenced former auditor general Muhammad Akhtar Buland Rana on two counts for a period of imprisonment totalling 12 months.
Rana was sentenced to serve six months for concealing his Canadian nationality and another six months for unlawfully obtaining five Pakistani passports.
Rana was removed from the office of auditor general in May 2015 by President Mamnoon Hussain.
He had been appointed in Aug 2011 under the orders of then president Asif Ali Zardari.
Rana, who hails from Multan, is believed to be a friend of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Previously he had worked as acting secretary of the human rights division and as deputy auditor general.
His appointment as auditor general was seen as controversial since it came at a time when the Public Accounts Committee was set to take up the government’s audit reports involving alleged financial irregularities and embezzlement of billions of rupees.

if a person can hide such things, do you think he will be fair to his job and has not made any money in nepotism or whatever mean exist?? i dont think so..it should be properly investgated else after 12 months he will go abroad as usual or stay here and enjoy the money he has made. 12 months turning black money into white not a bad deal otherwise.

Auditor General is the top Government functionary with main responsibility to check illegal expenditures. How come he survived such a long time despite all the illegalities involved in his on self? Those who appointed him must also be grilled.

There is need to review the clause. Concealment of facts and punishment just 6 month. Minimum punishment should be 10 years.

What is Pakistan's obsession with dual nationality? Dual national is also a national of Pakistan and must have equal and same rights similar to other citizens. Pakistan born dual nationals face NO such discrimination in Canada or USA when it comes to employment or contesting an elections. Pakistan rejects Pakistan born dual nationals which is detrimental to Pakistan itself - why ? Makes no sense

The punishment is very minimal this type of appointee should be punished for Max not like this i e every one will eat billions of Rupees of public funds and only Six months Jail is it a joke ???.
all must be brought to justice including PMs, Ministers and all Holding GOVT or public offices and no immunity to any one who so ever is he / she and what ever office they are holding important to be refrain from corruptions.
