KARACHI: Former world youth champion Moiz Baig overcame a strong challenge from Sanaullah brothers on the opening day of the Independence Day scrabble tournament at Beach Luxury Hotel on Sunday.

At the end of day one, Moiz was sitting pretty at the top with eight wins and a spread of 1,062.

The newly-crowned national champion Sohaib Sanaullah showed that his victory at the last month’s national championship was no fluke. The 15-year-old was currently second with eight wins and a spread of 393.

Older brother Daniyal Sanaullah is following his younger sibling closely. Daniyal ended day one in the third spot with seven wins and a spread of 892.

Tariq Pervez, Rashid Khan, Hasham Hadi, Abdullah Abbasi and Duha Saleem are all on seven wins each.

In Division ‘B’ category Rayyan Adeel of Aitchison College Lahore was on top. Rayyan had a spread of 722.

Ali Wasif and Teham Ahmed also had eight wins but were on the second and third spot, respectively, due to a lower spread.

The tournament is the last one scheduled before the Pakistan team leaves for Nottingham for the World Scrabble Championship and junior World Scrabble Championship.
