Inaugurating the second Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at Karachi's Port Qasim on Sunday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that LNG was the only solution to Pakistan's energy crisis.
"If you don't add more gas into the system, you cannot fight the energy crisis," he insisted, adding that other methods to produce energy are either too expensive or too slow.
Talking about the challenges faced during the project, the prime minister said that many people had questioned it [the project] when it started but "Port Qasim came through" and the terminal started functioning in less than 14 months "which is exemplary".
The premier further said that previous governments had made several attempts to introduce LNG as a source of energy in the country, "but only the PML-N government had succeeded in doing so".
The terminal was established by Engro Terminal Limited within a record time of 330 days and has the capacity to regasify up to 600 mmscfd. Applauding the services of private sector companies that worked on the terminal, Abbasi said that the project was a "real example of cooperation between private sector and the government".
Earlier in August, an official at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources said that imports by the LNG Terminal 1 on Port Qasim fulfil 25 per cent of the national gas shortage. The first terminal had received 102 shipments of LNG, the prime minister said today.

Yes, I agree, transparent, honest deals without any personal interest is one of many ways forward to our current political, energy and social issues. This is only viable when we have honest, loyal and not corrupted politicians who are competent and capable of providing basic necessities like: education, health care, Justice, clean water and job opportunities to everyone.

As many countries around the world ban vehicles using Diesel, expect someone in Pakistan to come up with a proposal to import more Diesel. Not because it will be cheaper (but ever so hazardous the environment and health) but because someone will stand to gain from lucrative import licenses. In Pakistan, profit trumps all other considerations.

To get more commissions in imports, local gas fields at Karak, gas and oil fields near Mianwali, many others in Pakistan are not developed...this is against the national agenda.
Pirkoh and others in so many areas need more investment instead of importing LNG at extra cost, this is very poor policy.

PM needs to state that LNG is one of the good solution for the Energy crises of the country and not the only solution for Energy crises. Actually among fossil Fuel gas is the best Fuel as high efficient energy of CCGT of 60 % efficiency is available with the half of CO2 emission compared to Oil firing and one third of Coal firing. The capital cost of CCGT plant is also 40 % less than Oil fired Power plant and 60 % less than Coal fired Power plant . The gas is a clean Fuel so maintenance cost will be lower. All these factor make the tariff low if there will be no corruption. It is worth mentioning here that for long term tariff Fuel cost is around 60 % of tariff. Pakistan have a good infrastructure of gas pipe line so to utilize this investment we need gas if our domestic gas will exhaust. Country needs to go on Energy mix solution, Hydel ( As Pakistan is blessed by water with Natural slope ), Solar as high DNI, Nuclear as posses enriched uranium, Coal only at mine mouth and last Oil.

For the general people efficiency of GGCT plant operated on gas at ISO 60% plus now a days. Oil with supercritical technology 44 %, Coal with Supercritical technology 38%. If Fuel cost component has a high bearing in the tariff then definitely we have to go with CCGT plant, this needs gas and here is the importance of LNG. World is going to minimize environmental pollution as the temperature of globe is increasing. To select the high efficiency plant , a fuel of high calorific value and less content of carbon the emission of CO2 /KWh will reduce. For example with 60 % gas fired CCGT we can manage CO2 emission/KWh to a level of 350 gram, while in case of Oil fired Plant it is around 650gram /Kwh with modern available technology and with Coal it is around 850 gram/Kwh. Please note that CO2 is a major gas in Green house gases. China and USA are working hard to reduce CO2 emission and it is good News that that last year world CO2 emission remains constant although Economy grew.

Actually for any comment we need to remain impartial.The Gas of 600 MMCFD is a good amount of gas.It can generate around 4000MW if used in efficient plant of CCGT.It means it can produce around 20 % Of country electrcity at a cheap rate with minimum pollution.Pakistan needs to put the case of carbon credit if this gas will be use in Bikki, Haweelean and another CCGT plant.I am sure that emmision of CO2 per KWh will be less than 400 gram.In USA such type of plants get concession.This was the good step of GOP altough GOP punished people by puuting Sahiwal Coal plant,Quid e Azam solar with exorbitant tariff of PV solar technolgy and karachi Nuclear by puuting untested unproven large units at the mouth of life line city of country.The Network system frequency can not bear the surge of this unit tripping and total system will go in to country black out situation.God for bid if tusnami like situation have to face how you can evacuate thick population of city.In the last at least GOP added

LNG is indeed a positive move for the country, particularly since it can be used to produce reasonably priced electricity AND can be used to reduce/eliminate natural gas shortages. Although currently more costly than most domestic gas it is less costly than furnace oil to generate electricity and over time its higher price may serve to increase/promote more domestic gas exploration and production.
LNG should not be the only option pursued for the country's energy needs BUT significant development of LNG represents a very viable course both economically and environmentally. Of course certain long term commitments are necessary to obtain the funding to build facilities.

With due respect you are wrong, the long term and genuine solution lies, in making the utility companies accountable for UFG, honestly and genuinely work to obtain Gas from Iran, and obtain LNG at the market price, disperse it at market price, and let the Gas based industry sustain.

How about really discounting solar panels and making it attractive for individual home owners and businesses to deploy it. For example, start with all Federal Govt. offices/buildings to be run through solar energy since office are only open during the day-time. Individual homes can be afforded battery bank on govt. subsidized prices so more and more homes comes off the WAPDA dependency. That is the fastest way to ensure people get electricity.

The need of the hour is to satisfy our energy needs from our own resources and not imports because it costs $ which we are short of. More emphasis is needed in generating electricity, the cheap type. Pakistan is well placed to do so.
Wind farms and solar panels are fast tracks to this end. If we can produce nuclear war heads and complex delivery systems, we can surely make quite cheaply, solar panels and wind turbines. There is no excuse for not doing so.
