KARACHI: Three outfits named after former Olympians Hasan Sardar, Manzoor Hussain Jr and Akhtar Rasool conjured up victories over their opponents on the opening day of the Essa Lab Quaid-i-Azam five-a-side U-19 hockey tournament which got into action at the Islahuddin-Dr M. A. Shah Academy on Wednesday.

Hasan Sardar XI inflicted 8-4 defeat on Shahbaz Ahmed XI in the first match of the day.

In the next match, Manzoor Hussain Jr XI carved out an 8-2 victory over Islahuddin Siddiqui X1.

In the last match, Akhtar Rasool XI overcomes fighting Shahnaz Sheikh XI 6-5.

Six teams are competing in the week long event which is organised by the Pakistan Hockey Feder­ation (PHF). The event concludes on Tuesday.

The competition was formally inaugurated by Dr Farhan Essa. Former Olympian Islahuddin was also present.
