MULTAN, Aug 20: Members of the High Court Bar Association, Multan bench, staged a sit-in on Wednesday to protest against absence of any representation of south Punjab in the recently-appointed judges to the Lahore High Court.
The sit-in was organized by the Bar association. Prominent among the protesters were Pakistan Bar Council vice-president Mian Abbas Ahmed, HCBA senior vice-president Rao Jamshed Ali, Haider Jamal Maitla, Kunwar Younas, Abid Hussain Bhutta, Mazhar Jameel Qureshi and Haider Javed Gardezi.
Earlier, the Bar association held a protest meeting in which speakers condemned the step-motherly treatment being meted out to south Punjab by the decision-makers in Lahore.
They said legal fraternity of the area had been demanding a full-fledged high court in Multan, but the authorities were hatching a conspiracy to deprive the area even of the LHC bench by not giving representation in the judiciary.
Rejecting the fresh appointments of judges in the LHC, they demanded a new list having fair share of Multan and its adjoining areas. They warned that if the authorities failed to redress their grievances, the lawyers might stage sit-ins in Islamabad.
ASSUMES CHARGE: The regional directorate of the newly-evolved district government audit department under the devolution plan has started working here with the appointment of its director.
A senior official of Auditor General of Pakistan Chaudhry Muhammad Younas assumed charge as the DGA regional director here on Wednesday. He had been working as director finance/treasurer of the Bahauddin Zakariya University for the last four years prior to his new assignment.
The Multan regional DGA directorate will be responsible to conduct audit of the local government of the district that once fell under the jurisdiction of former Multan civil division. Besides, it will also audit all departments devolved to the districts, such as, education, health and community development.
Among other staff of the regional DGA directorate, there will be two deputy directors (Audit) and 10 audit teams to carry out the task. Under the constitution, the final audit report will have to be submitted to the federal and provincial public accounts committees.
Academic staff association, officers welfare association and staff of the BZU’s director finance office held separate farewell parties in honour of outgoing treasurer Chaudhry Younas, appreciating his efforts to computerize cash book, salary, income and budget sections of the university.
VISIT: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool is to pay a visit of Shujaabad tehsil on Aug 23.
According to an official press release, the governor will inspect the local offices of various federal government departments, including Wapda, SNGPL, Post Office, Railways, Zarai Tarraqiati Bank, PTCL and Nadra.
Multan DCO Chaudhry Ijaz chaired a meeting in the committee room of his office to discuss arrangements for the governor’s visit.
WARNED: The State Bank has warned the general public not to accept currency notes inscribed with any kind of religious, political and commercial slogans.
According to a press note issued by the SBP (Multan) chief manager, Inayatullah Sahi, all such currency notes had lost their legal position under the Legal Tender Ordinance, 1977, and would not be acceptable to the central bank or any of the commercial banks.
RESULTS: The Bahauddin Zakariya University on Wednesday declared the results of MA Economics (Part-I) Second Annual Examinations, 2002.
As many as 300 candidates appeared in the examination. Of them, 152 were declared successful showing a pass ratio of 51.01 per cent.
