ISLAMABAD: The China Culture Centre hosted an exhibition of traditional Chinese clothes on Sunday at the National Art Gallery.

“The clothes are bright and jubilant in colours with much attention to detail. The clothes reflect different environments and aesthetic interests,” said Cultural Counsellor You Yi.

The hosts explained to the guests that traditional costumes play an important role in China’s history and culture. The basic features are cross collar, wrapping the right lapel over the left, tying a sash and a form of blouse and a skirt or long gown. These features have been preserved for thousands of years.

“Traditional attire is only work during certain festivals, ceremonies or religious occasions. However, they are often seen in Chinese television serials and movies. Many of the country’s ethnic minorities also wear their traditional clothes every day,” You Yi said.

The exhibition focuses on the artistic, visual and practical characteristics of these costumes and also demonstrates clothes from the Ming Dynasties to the period of the Republic of China.

The exhibition also depicts various categories of costumes such as traditional wedding dresses, traditional and modern cheongsam and party dresses. The dresses stressed harmonic balance and contrast. Visitors admired the meticulous handiwork on each garment, which was the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking labour.

Ministry of Heritage Joint Secretary Junaid Akhlaq said such events strengthen people to people bonding.

“The display is impressive, which reflects a way of life, expression of elegance and an attractive and colourful history,” Mr Akhlaq said.

The display will run till Oct 18.
