The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Tuesday imposed a Rs1 million fine on Geo News for airing comments against the Pakistan Army.

The channel had reportedly accused the country's armed forces of 'institutional corruption'.

According to a statement issued by the authority, Pemra had approved the recommendations of the Councils of Complaints (CoCs) of Karachi and Lahore which had sought a Rs1 million fine for Geo News for repeatedly airing "comments against armed forces" in connection with "institutional corruption” during a TV programme, “Aapas ki Baat”, which aired on January 9, 17, 24 and 25.

Pemra said it had received a large number of complaints against the said programme.

The authority, on the recommendations of a committee, also suspended the landing rights of private TV channel Starlite for seven days for the airing of "obscene and vulgar" content on June 6, 2017.
