Abbottabad lament

WHEN I moved to Abbottabad about 17 years ago, it was a heavenly city surrounded by lush, green mountains. Unfortunately in present times, these green belts have been replaced by cemented belts. Even though traffic congestion poses a serious problem for residents on a daily basis, public transport is not used.

Also, accident rates are high because traffic rules are not observed properly. That said walking is no longer an option for people. To add, hazardous gases emitted by heavy vehicles contribute to pollution and are a major cause of diseases. The use of automobile horns near hospitals and education centres adds to noise pollution.

Other problems for residents include the establishment of poultry farms and the running of ‘crush’ plants near residential areas. Also, the increasing numbers of slaughter houses in the main city spread different diseases.

As if these problems were not enough, deforestation is going on at an alarming rate. Mounds of garbage are visible throughout the city because there is no proper collection method and no designated spots for dumping waste. The sewage system is almost non-existent. Stray dogs are found in large numbers and many dog bite cases have been reported.

Polythene bags add to environmental degradation. Since there is lack of knowledge about dangers to environment, educated people should come forward and play their role.
