JAIL: As many as 600 prisoners have been kept in the district jail here against its capacity of 130, which has been causing problems for both the management and prisoners, sources said.
They said that the district jail was built in 1894 for 85 prisoners. At that time Swabi was sub-division of Mardan district and had very small population, but now its population is over 1.6 million.
The sources told this correspondent that a few years ago the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had constructed two separate barracks for female pensioners and their children, increasing its capacity from 85 to 130 prisoners. However, no other work was carried out to provide facilities to the prisoners, they said.
The sources said that there were 15 female prisoners in the jail and four of them had small children, while it had the sanctioned space for only 10 women. They said that the prisoners face great problems due to overcrowding and prolonged power outages.
They said that a new judicial lockup with an enhanced capacity would be built in Shahmansoor Township.
