The Sindh government has announced that tracking devices should be installed on all motorcycles across the province, in an attempt they claim will help curb the menace of street crimes.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal and attended by tracking companies, motorcycle manufacturers, Sindh police, excise department, Rangers and Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

It was also decided that vehicles found without tracking devices six months after issuance of the order would be impounded.

The names of tracking companies authorised to carry out the task will be released soon, the provincial government said.

It will also be mandatory to register all new motorcycles before bringing them on the roads.

The meeting was informed that around 600,000 new motorcycles were being purchased in the province per annum, and the decision was taken to curb street crimes as most of the crimes were reportedly committed by motorcycle riders.

According to DawnNews, the exercise will create a business opportunity of around Rs6 billion only in Karachi where more than 2.5 million motorcycles are registered.

The minister also expressed concern over unregistered Qingqi rickshaws and ordered that they should be registered without any delay.
