An Intelligence Bureau (IB) official was killed and four others wounded when two armed riders reportedly opened fire outside the gate of an imambargah in the federal capital on Wednesday evening, DawnNews reported.

According to the initial police report, two assailants targeted the IB official when he was coming out of the imambargah in Sector I-8 after offering Maghrebain prayers.

Industrial Area SP Liaquat Niazi told DawnNews that four suspects on two bikes approached Imambargah Babul Ilm located in Sector I-8.

Two attackers proceeded to the gate of the imambargah and opened fire on the people as they were coming out of the mosque after offering prayers, Niazi said.

A probe has been launched and the suspects are being traced with the help of CCTV cameras, the senior police official said.

According to sources the suspects approached the area from Faizabad side and fled towards the same area after committing the crime.

Sources also told DawnNews that there is a checkpoint in the vicinity but no police personnel was present there at the time of the attack due to a departmental meeting.

Federal Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal was quick to take notice of the incident and termed it a conspiracy to destabilise the country.
