KARACHI: Faisal Edhi, son of the late social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi, launched 100 new ambulances to be added to the fleet of the Edhi Foundation ambulances at the foundation’s office on Sunday morning.

The new ambulances will be sent to various Edhi Centres located at different places all over the country.

Responding to Dawn queries, Mr Edhi said that the foundation had imported these ambulances at a cost of around Rs2 million each from China.

He said that five to six ambulances had been donated by various individuals / organisations while the rest had been purchased by the foundation from its own funds.

He said that currently the foundation’s fleet comprised around 1,800 ambulances, out which around 300 were very old and had become non-operational and the fleet had shrunk to around 1,500.

Now with the addition of 100 new ambulances the fleet would comprise around 1,600 ambulances.

He said that since the Edhi Foundation was allowed to import the ambulances without payment of customs duty, etc, taxes, now the foundation was in process of getting the permission from the FBR so that these worn-out old ambulances could be sold out, he added.
