HARIPUR: Human rights activist and lawyer Abdul Basit died in a road accident on Khanpur Road here on Monday.

Mr Basit’s wife also suffered injuries in the accident, which occurred after a speeding van hit his motorcycle. The deceased was affiliated with a local NGO, Human Development Organisation, and appeared for victims of gender-based violence and torture before the courts of law in several cases.

The police and witnesses said Mr Basit, who was on the way to his native village, Pind Gakhra, with wife on motorcycle, met accident near Nain Sukh Khanpur village.

They said the motorcycle was hit by a recklessly driven van while overtaking another vehicle. The police and witnesses said the rights activist died on the spot after suffering head injuries, while his wife had critical injuries.

The deceased and the injured were shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Khanpur from where the woman was referred to the Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad.
