PML-N MNA Ghulam Bibi Bharwana has formally submitted her resignation to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, DawnNews reported on Thursday.

Bharwana had announced her resignation last Sunday during a Khatm-i-Nabuwwat conference in Faisalabad organised by Pir Hameeduddin Sialvi, who has been demanding the resignation of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah for remarks that were perceived as being in favour of Ahmadis.

Her resignation reads: "A member of the Punjab government's cabinet has had a blasphemous attitude towards the finality of Prophet Muhammad's prophethood." She adds that her protest regarding this went unheard, which is why she was was now resigning from the NA-88 (Chiniot) seat.

Bharwana was among five lawmakers from Punjab — two MNAs and three MPAs — who announced their resignations on Sunday in protest against Sanaullah's remarks.

The Punjab law minister has been under fire from religious quarters for his remarks regarding the status of Ahmadis, which he maintains have been “distorted and twisted by some rivals to take political advantage”.

Pir Sialvi, who is also a former senator, earlier claimed at least 15 parliamentarians “spiritually associated” with the Sial Sharif shrine would tender their resignations in protest on the matter.
