GUJRAT: The incidents of house robbery have increased in the city for the last some weeks as two houses were robbed during the last couple of days in Shadman colony alone.
The suspects took away cash and valuables worth around Rs20 million from two houses, including that of a leading furniture company’s owner.
Civil Lines police said an inter-district gang had been operative in the city’s posh areas which was traced but yet to be nabbed.
According to reports, four suspects barged into the house of Asif Iqbal, owner of a leading furniture company of Gujrat, in Shadman colony and held the family hostage.
The inmates told the police that initially the suspects were not wearing any masks, but as soon as they started searching the house they put masks on their faces and wore hand gloves.
During their more-than-an-hour stay, they consumed eatables from the kitchen and made off with cash and valuables worth Rs12.5m.
Another incident occurred in the same colony where some suspects looted the house of Tariq Nadeem and took away cash and valuables.
Similarly, some robbers targetted the house of Asif Butt in Kareem street along Railway road in A Division police precincts and looted cash and valuables worth Rs2.5m the other day.
It was learnt that police had shown pictures of some suspects to members of the houses and they identified all robbers.
Talking to Dawn, city DSP Hafiz Imtiaz claimed that police had almost traced the suspects involved in the recent incidents and two teams were working to arrest the gangsters.
He said the suspects were allegedly involved in many incidents in Lahore, Gujranwala and Sargodha.
Another Gujrat police officer said four members of the gang had already been detained around two months ago but the remaining members formed a new gang “that has again become operative in the city and is a major challenge to them.”
