LARKANA: The protesting faculty of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) and its affiliated colleges on Tuesday called off their 15-day boycott of academic activities after the general body meeting of the district chapter of teachers’ association gave its approval to the decision taken by their leaders.

The general body was informed that Larkana District and Sessions Judge Abdul Ghafoor Kalhoro had consented to supervise the process of implementation of the agreement(s) between the university administration and faculty regarding the latter’s charter of demands.

Judge Kalhoro had intervened on Monday to help settle the row by convening a session with representatives of both sides in his chamber. The deliberations of the session were placed before the general body of the teachers’ association held at the Chandka Medical College (CMC) on Tuesday. After discussing the matter at length, the meeting agreed to call off the boycott.

Office-bearers of the association’s Larkana and Sukkur chapters, as well as other senior academic staff including Dr Abdul Rasheed Shaikh, the convener of the association, Dr Ghulam Rasool Ghumro and Dr Inayat Magsi spoke at the general body meeting and most of them agreed to call off the boycott.

The meeting also decided to submit its proceedings, along with the issues being faced by teachers, to the Sindh High Court.
