MULTAN: The police have arrested two men for allegedly resorting to aerial firing on Saturday night to celebrate the victory of PML-N candidate Rana Mehmoodul Hassan in Senate elections.

After the incident of aerial firing was reported by the electronic media, City Police Officer Sarfraz Falki ordered the police concerned to arrest the suspects after lodging a case against them.

The police conducted a raid at the outhouse of the winning candidate but failed to arrest the suspects.

Meanwhile, the CPO directed Cantonment Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Fahad to probe the matter and submit a report to him.

Following the orders, the police arrested two suspects -- Farhan and Umer, recovering pistols used in the firing from them.

GILANI: Former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has expressed the hope that independently-elected senators will supported the Pakistan Peoples Party like they have been doing in the past. Talking to the media here on Sunday, Mr Gilani said his party was trying to get elected its candidate as Senate chairman with the support of its allies.

“However, who will be the party candidate for the (Senate) chairmanship will be decided by the party,” he added.

He said the party would soon contact independently-elected senators to win their support for its candidate.

He denied the allegations that his party was involved in horse-trading.

“If we were involved in horse-trading we would have won seats from Punjab as well,” he argued.

To a question, he said let the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) probe the Multan Metro Bus Project scam, adding that saying anything about it at this stage would be premature.
