I WOULD like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned to the problem of deforestation in Karachi.
Deforestation leads to water erosion, causing the loss of soil and nutrients; cutting trees on slopes also increases wind velocities. The cutting down of forests causes an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which harms the environment and all living beings.
Mangroves are an evergreen forest that tolerates salt and can be found in tropical climates. But in and around Karachi, the mangrove forests are facing are deforestation, pollution and overharvesting of resources.
As a result of deforestation, Karachi receives less rainfall and the temperature of the city is increasing with each passing year. Meanwhile, concrete buildings, industries, and signboards are killing the city’s greenery.
We need to plant a tree wherever possible. We can buy recycled products and then recycle them, raise awareness in our social circles and communities about the importance of planting trees. Fortunately, there are environmentally and forest-friendly businesses that are helping stop deforestation. They just need our support.
